Diamondbacks 1/2, Reds 9/Indians 3

Cameron Spencer

There was to be no joy for Arizona in the final split-squad session of 2014, as both sides lost. The road D-backs went down heavily in Goodyear, but the Salt River Fields bunch kept it closer.

First out of the gate were the Arizona B-Backs, whose defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds in Goodyear can hardly have come as much of a shock, with Randall Delgado the only player there for us, likely even to have a sniff of a spot on our Opening Day roster. Thus, the fact that the Reds' Tony Cingrani, a pitcher with 18 major-league starts to his name, held us to one run on five hits over seven innings, is neither surprising nor particularly concerning. Our sole run came off the bat of Nick Evans, who homered in the fourth. Andy Marte had a pair of hits, Aaron Cunningham walked twice, and Nick Ahmed had a hit and a walk.

On the pitching side, despite the final score, starter Randall Delgado didn't have too bad a day. He worked four innings, scattering seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts, and held Cincinnati to two runs, both earned. All their other damage was done after he left the game - and, indeed, after Ryan Rowland-Smith had maintained his zero spring ERA, with a pair of shutout innings. Particularly victimized this afternoon were Cesar Carillo, who faced five batters in the seventh and allowed five hits, four of them scoring, and Jess Todd, who gave up two hits, two walks and three earned runs in his two-thirds of the ninth.

All the meaningful action was back at Salt River Fields, where the A-backs had a much closer game against the Indians. Wade Miley started there and suffered a loss by a thousand cuts, giving up single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. He finished with a line of 4.2 innings pitched, three runs allowed, all earned, on seven hits and a walk, with three strikeouts. However, the bullpen blanked Cleveland thereafter, one-hitting them over the remaining 4.1 innings, led by Josh Collmenter's 2.1 hitless frames. Brad Ziegler worked a scoreless eighth, then Joe Thatcher and Addison Reed combined for the same in the ninth.

The offense struggled, managing only five hits off Cleveland starter Corey Kluber, and two relievers (including the man with the best name in baseball, Marc Rzepczynski). The two runs for Arizona both came after most of our regular starters had left the game, in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rudy Flores and Sean Jamieson each singled to drive in a run, but that was our last action on the basepaths, as the last seven Diamondbacks went down in order. Tony Campana stole a base, and there was a good crowd of 11,929 for the final game at Salt River Fields, for a game played in a crisp two hours and 23 minutes.

It'll be back to Chase Field for the Diamondbacks now, as they face the Cubs for the final two exhibition games, tomorrow and Saturday. I imagine it'll be Trevor Cahill starting tomorrow for Arizona, and it will be an evening game, at the regular Friday night start-time of 6:40pm.
