Diamondbacks 1, Dodgers 3

Clayton Kershaw out-dueled Wade Miley, and a couple of defensive miscues came back to bite the Diamondbacks, as the Dodgers took the first game of the 2014 season in Sydney.

Wade Miley went five innings, and held the Dodgers to three hits, while striking out eight batters. However, he also walked two batters, and another reached on a wild pitch third strike that Miguel Montero was unable to block - and these free passes were responsible for two of the Dodgers three runs. Los Angeles got on the board in the second inning, largely because Mark Trumbo's first ball in left field looked like a home-run, but ended up a double off the wall [there'll be a GIF to follow]. They then added two more in the fourth, as Scott Van Slyke managed to flip a pitch the opposite way and just over the wall in right.

Meanwhile, the D-backs were struggling to cope with Kershaw: they got some hits, but were largely unable to string them together after putting two on with one out in the first. Our sole tally crossed home plate in the sixth, when Paul Goldschmidt doubled to lead things off, and came home on a groundout by Trumbo. Goldie had two of our five hits, while Aaron Hill reached safely twice, on a hit and a walk. Martin Prado made the D-backs' first error of the year, and if you had Trumbo in the "first outfield assist" sweepstakes, congratulations, as he gunned down Kershaw at second base in the seventh.

It's back at Sydney Cricket Ground again later this evening (Phoenix time) or tomorrow afternoon (New South Wales time), as the D-backs look to Trevor Cahill to secure a split. He'll go up against Hyun-Jin Ryu.
