Diamondbacks 2, Giants 3

Brian Bahr

Getaway day? Check. Extra innings? Check. Diamondbacks win? Er... About that. Several bad decisions likely cost the team victory, as they lost in 11 innings to the Giants.

Wade Miley's start was certainly an improvement on his last one, as he allowed two runs over seven innings of work. on five hits and two walks, with three strikeouts. The trouble was, inevitably, the fourth inning, where a lead-off walk started trouble that included a run-scoring wild pitch and both runs Miley allowed. Meanwhile, the D-backs offense were unable to solve Madison Bumgarner, who worked six scoreless innings, but matters weren't helped by Wade Miley inexplicably not bunting with Adam Eaton on first, instead hitting into a double-play that likely cost us a run.

The D-backs came back with a two-running inning of their own in the eighth, with a sacrifice fly by Eric Chavez and an RBI single by A.J. Pollock. Another chance was wasted in the ninth, as pinch-runner Tony Campana was picked off for the first out, and might have scored in that inning too. Instead, we went into extras, and Kirk Gibson was ejected in the tenth for arguing a call at first, initially got wrong by the guy who threw him out earlier in the series. For the 11th inning, Arizona turned to Joe Thatcher. I'm sure you can guess how that went...

Admittedly Miguel Montero throwing to second on a bunt and not getting an out didn't help, but Thatcher failed to retire any of the three batters faced, and the Giants walked off with the game, and a split of the series. It's down the coast to Los Angeles for the D-backs, but guest writer Ryan from In the Zona will be along with the full recap in a bit.
