Summer, and all you get is re-runs. Yesterday, we saw a repeat of Cahill vs. Vogelsong, and the end result was more or less the same, a 4-2 victory for the D-backs, compared to 4-3 the first time around. The main difference was that both starters were involved in the decision, something which didn't happen to either of them last time. We have done progressively better against Vogelsong this season: the first time we saw him, his Game Score was 49; that dropped to 41 for his second start against us, and feel even further, to 32, last night.

However, that improvement is far from a given. Eric Stults is the poster-child for the other half: we did well against him the first time, but he then pitched a two-hit complete game against us next time. All told, of the 30 pitchers we've seen twice this year, 11 have done better the second time (Game Score more than five points higher), 13 have done worse (more than five lower) and six were more or less the same (within five on either side). So, pretty much whatever Petit does tonight: I told you so. :) Let's hope our offense does have a better game-plan - or, at least, a different one, because whatever it was last week, didn't work very well.

Today is also Chris Owings first start, after a couple of appearance off the bench as a pinch-hitter - this will be the first time he takes the field, and we get to see what he brings with his glove. Apart from him replacing Willie Bloomquist, it's the same players who faced Petit last time out, just shuffled into a different order. We'll see in a bit whether this is re-arranging the deckchairs on the Titanic, or if the ingredients will combine for something more than two runs over six innings and a career-high number of strikeouts.

I mention this because we have now gone 9 consecutive games against the Giants without a home-run. The last time we went deep off a San Francisco pitcher was when Goldschmidt cranked a three-run homer off Jeremy Affeldt in the 8th inning at Chase on June 7. Since then, we have had 338 PAs and been kept inside the park. This likely helps explain why we have scored a total of 23 runs in those nine contests, and none of them have provided tacos. I'm hopeful the streak will end this evening: maybe Goldschmidt can run into one, as his current homerless streak of 14 games is the longest of the season.
