Diamondbacks 2, Dodgers 1

Norm Hall

Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer in the first, and that was enough, as the D-backs held on to edge the Dodgers, in the series opener at Chase Field.

The last time the D-backs faced Hyun-Jin Ryu, they jumped out early, and they repeated that tonight, with Paul Goldschmidt hitting his 32nd home-run of the season, with one out in the first. It also scored A.J. Pollock, who had walked to lead things off. However, that was it for the offense. No, really: that was it. After the home-run, Arizona managed only one base-runner the rest of the way, an Aaron Hill single with two outs in the seventh, as Ryu kept the D-backs off-balance with a selection of off-speed offerings.

However, after an extended first, Trevor Cahill also settled down, at least through the fifth inning. The sixth was different, as he walked three, including one with the bases loaded to get the Dodgers on the board. He was lifted, but Josh Collmenter got two huge outs to preserve the lead. He also worked the seventh, and David Hernandez a scoreless eighth. Brad Ziegler got into trouble, the first two Dodgers singling off him, but a bunt attempt failed to advance the runners, and after a groundout, he got Matt Kemp, in his first at-bat since July, to swing and miss, sealing the win.

The Dodgers' magic number remains at four, and we're back at Chase Field tomorrow for the second in the four-game series, with Zack Greinke taking on Patrick Corbin. We'll be there in person for that one, and are massively relieved to know that Los Angeles can't clinch the division there.
