Dbacks 3, Dodger 5: Another taste of our own medicine

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Tonight we got another taste of what other teams have felt throughout the season as the Dodgers walked off against us in extras.

Record: 72-72 On pace: 81-81 WC Elimination #: 10 Division #: 6

Cahill got the worst of his night out of the way pretty quickly. In the first inning he gave up a walk and a hit with two outs to Hanley Ramirez and Adrian Gonzalez, but then got Andre Either to fly out to Adam Eaton in center to end the inning. He wasn't so lucky in the second. Juan Uribe lead things off with a walk. Cahill then got A. J. Ellis (or "The First Ellis in the Batting Order" as I've affectionately known him all night) to line out to Didi Gregorius at shortstop. The next batter was Mark Ellis. During his at bat, Cahill uncorked a wild pitch, which allowed the runner to go to second. Mark Ellis then got a hit, which put runners on the corners, and the Dodgers starting pitcher, Edinson Volquez, to the plate. As you would expect with one out, Volquez laid down a bunt. Montero fielded it, and rather than go to first for the easy out, he tried to go for the double play. And he then promptly threw the ball into center field, allowing a run to score and Mark Ellis to go to third. Yasiel Puig got an RBI single before Cahill was able to end the inning. 2-0 Dodgers.

It took a couple innings, but the Dbacks did respond. In the fourth, Miguel Montero knocked in an RBI with a single, cutting the lead in half. Then in the fifth, Gregorius came to the plate with Geraldo Parra on base. He then proceeded to hit the ball way out of the park to give the Dbacks a 3-2 lead. I hope they enjoyed it, because it didn't last long.In the bottom of the fifth, Andre Either got an RBI double to tie the game at three.

And that's where it stayed for a good long time. Vasquez and Cahill both pitched scoreless sixth innings, and then the game was handed over to the bullpens. Paco Rodriguez and David Hernandez pitched the top and bottom of the seventh, respectively. Ronald Belisario and Kenley Jansen pitched the eighth and ninth for the Dodgers, while Will Harris pitched both the eighth and ninth for the Diamondbacks. That sent the game into extras, where we found out for sure that tonight really wasn't meant to be. Josh Collmenter came in for the tenth, got out of a jam he created for himself there, but wasn't able to put the Dodgers away in the eleventh. He gave up a walk off, two run home run to Scott Van Slyke. Dodgers win 5 - 3.

Well, that could have gone better, that's for sure. Come back tomorrow at 7:10 Arizona time as we try to salvage the last game of this series!
