Diamondbacks 10, Padres 9

Norm Hall

Well, that was... Oh, I dunno. Interesting? Fun? Nervewracking? All of the above? This game will be remembered for many things. David Holmberg's debut is only going to be one of them.

David Holmberg got into trouble very early, as the first five Padres reached, and they took a three-run lead before the Diamondbacks came to the plate. However, Gerardo Parra's tenth home-run of the year tied the game at three in the second, and they scored three in the fifth off Ian Kennedy, and one more in the sixth, to take a 7-3 lead. Holmberg lasted only 3.2 innings, being charged with three runs on six hits and three walks; Josh Collmenter got the final out with the bases loaded in the fourth, and worked 3.1 innings of one-hit ball.

However, the D-backs bullpen melted down, coughing up four runs in the seventh, charged to Chas Roe and Joe Thatcher., as the Padres tied the game. After a two-run double by Martin Prado restored a lead, Brad Ziegler then blew our league-leading 26th save of the season, and it took some great defense from Parra and Prado even to keep the game tied. We wasted a good chance to win in the ninth, but in the tenth, with men on second and third, one out, and San Diego playing a five-man infield, Aaron Hill lined a single to left center, for another ho-hum, come from behind, double blown-save Diamondbacks victory.

The series continues tomorrow night at Chase Field. Wade Miley gets the start for the Diamondbacks there, as we go for the sweep.
