Dbacks Minor League Round-Up 8/24: Bullpen Candidates

Will David Hernandez be headed back to Arizona with the bullpen in dire straits? - USA TODAY Sports

Following the Dbacks 18-inning affair with Philadelphia Saturday night, one obvious question is who might get called up to bolster the depleted bullpen? And more importantly, is there any chance of them getting to Philly in time for a 1:00pm start? I don't know the answer to the second question but the list of arms available from Reno might include Tyler Skaggs (who last pitched on August 20), Joe Paterson (who didn't pitch Friday or Saturday), recently acquired Shawn Camp, who is 37 years old and has been in the majors for the last 10 years, Tony Sipp (who has been very good in Reno), or David Hernandez (who hasn't allowed a run in his 5 games with Reno).

My guess is Sipp and Hernandez get the call to replace Putz and Roe. Neither pitched Saturday night and both might have been rushed to the Reno airport once the length of the game started dragging on.

Triple A: Reno 2 Salt Lake 7. Charles Brewer had a fair start allowing 3 runs over 6 innings. But the bullpen couldn't keep it close as Chase Anderson allowed 2 runs and Shawn Camp allowed 2 more. On offense Tyler Bortnick went 3 for 5 and Juan Rivera went 2 for 4 with a triple.

Double A: Mobile 4 @ Tennessee 3. Bradin Hagens surrendered 3 runs over 5 innings and the bullpen and the offense made that prove to be good enough. Nick Ahmed stroked a 2-run single in the 7th and Ryan Court and Mike Freeman followed with RBI singles in the 8th. Four relievers delivered 4 near-perfect shutout innings with Jake Barrett getting his 12th save.

High A: Visalia 2 @ Stockton 0. Brad Allen made his first start for Visalia and delivered the goods with 6 strong shutout innings on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8. If you recall Allen threw a no-hitter for South Bend back on August 10. All that did was earn him long-relief duty his next two games where he posted 7 shutout innings with 14 strikeouts. He got the promotion he deserved and he made the most of his debut. Tom Belza belted a solo home run in the 2nd and Ronnie Freeman added an RBI double in the 9th. Kaleb Fleck pitched a perfect 9th for his 9th save.

Low A: South Bend 4 Great Lakes 9. Blake Perry got hit pretty hard for 6 runs in 4 innings and the offense never threatened to overcome that in spite of 15 hits. Socrates Brito had 3 hits to lead a contingent of 5 Hawks who had at least 2 hits.

Short Season A: Hillsboro 1 Boise 2. The Hops 7-game winning streak came to an end with a tough 2-1 loss. Jose Martinez made his first start in a month and went just 2 innings. Ben Eckels came after the 3rd and put up 6 strong innings with just 1 run allowed while striking out 7. Josh Parr went 2 for 4 with a double to lead the 5-hit attack.

Rookie: Missoula 6 @ Orem 7. The Osprey tried to rally back from a 6-2 deficit but could only get within 1. None of the pitching was very inspired as three pitchers each surrendered runs. Jake Miller hit a solo home run and both Colin Bray and Yorman Garcia had a pair of hits.

AZL Rookie: Dbacks 5 @ Athletics 11.Dallas Newton got rocked for 6 runs in his 5 innings of work. Wagner Mateo allowed 2 more in his quest to become a pitcher. Luis Hernandez let in 3 more runs in his 1/3 inning of work. Sergio Alcantara had a triple and 3 RBI to pace a balanced offense. Eric Chavez, Miguel Montero and Willie Bloomquist all played and they went a combined 0 for 10.
