I can't believe I have never attended a AZRL game before. A friend and I showed up at Salt River Fieldsat about 6:30 to watch our young guys take on the AZRL Royals. It was the definition of FREE BASEBALL! Parking and admission were both free. We walked in and sat down on the first row. (Technically, the only row. The game was played on the "B" field.) Royals and D'Backs players milled around, waiting for the game to start. Most of them were nice and chatted with fans while they waited. I got up to ask one the D'Backs coming from the locker room if there was a water fountain and it turned out to be Mark Grace! A few minutes later Miguel Montero walked by. (He was the DH for the game while he is rehabbing his back.)
It was a great night. Many of the players on our team are young Latinos and they were hooting and chirping the whole game. The weather was beautiful.
The D'Backs rookies lost the lead in the 8th, but came back to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. The throw to the plate for the winning run sailed wide and stopped at the chain link fence right in front of us. I pulled the fencing out and grabbed the ball for an awesome souvenir.
If you like baseball and free stuff the Arizona Rookie League is the place to be. If you plan on going here's a couple things you should know:
- There are no vendors or water fountains so make sure you bring drinks and snacks with you. Coolers are allowed.
- Seating is extremely limited if they are playing on the back field so you may want to bring a folding chair or get there early.
- They don't have names on their jerseys. If you want to cheer them on I would print out a roster before hand.
