Last year's 4th round draft pick out of Timberview High School in Texas Chuck Taylor didn't get off to the best of starts. He played all year for the AZL Dbacks and hit just .232 with a .598 OPS. It didn't suggest his star was going to burn very brightly as a Dbacks prospect. But this season has been an entirely different story. The switch-hitting outfielder leads Missoula in most offensive categories (or is in the top 3) including average (.372), OBP (.471), OPS (1.005), hits (16), RBI (8) and SLG (.535). He can play any of the outfield positions but has been playing in the corners mostly due to a glut of center fielders on the team. He's not very big (5-9, 185) and he's not really much of a power hitter, which usually gets him erased from most prospect lists. He does have some speed though he's not a speedster. And most importantly he's only 19, and this would essentially be his freshman year in college had he gone that route. He kind of reminds me of Gerardo Parra with his skill set and body type. I lowered him pretty far down my prospect list after last year's indifferent season. But he's doing a lot to work his way back up. He's one to keep watching, especially if he can keep up his current pace throughout the season.
3 Stars: Brandon Sinnery, South Bend 9 IP, 6 H, 0 BB, 8 K, 0 ER, W (5-4)
2 Stars: Matt Davidson, Reno 3 for 4, 1 BB, 1 R, 2 DBL, 1 TPL, 2 RBI
3 Stars: Eddie McKeirnan, Visalia 6 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 3 K, 0 ER, W (1-1)
0 Stars: Jordan Parr, Hillsboro 0 for 4, 2 K, 4 Errors (15)
Triple A: Reno 9 @ Colorado Springs 2. Garrett Mock had one of his better starts allowing 2 runs (1 earned) over 5 innings, and the offense broke it open in the middle innings with 16 hits including 6 doubles and 3 triples. Matt Davidson had another big night going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and a triple. Brad Snyder had 3 hits with a double, a triple and 3 RBI. And Ed Easley had 3 hits with a triple and an RBI.
High A: Visalia 4 @ San Jose 2. Eddie McKiernan's second start as a Dbacks farmhand went much better than his first as he tossed 6 shutout innings and watched while the bullpen hung on for his first professional win in the Dbacks system. The offense racked up 13 hits with David Nick and Jon Griffin getting 3 apiece. Griffin also hit his first home run for Visalia since coming down from Mobile last week. Sean Jamieson went 2 for 4 with a double.
Low A: South Bend 6 @ Fort Wayne 0. Brandon Sinnery tossed a complete game shutout on 6 hits and no walks while striking out 8. Sinnery was a Midwest League All Star and the 23-year-old right hander out of Michigan is bucking for a promotion. The game was quite close until the offense broke it open with 4 runs in the 9th. Brandon Drury had 3 doubles and Fidel Pena hit his 5th home run of the year.
Short Season A: Hillsboro 2 Vancouver 9. The defense was atrocious with 6 errors including 4 by Jordan Parr, all throwing errors. The game might have been interesting otherwise. Jonathan Pulley allowed 6 runs (just 3 earned) over 5 innings of work. The offense threatened a lot with 14 hits but couldn't push across more than 3 runs. Ryan Gebhardt, Yogey Perez-Ramos, and George Roberts all had 3 hits. Ty Linton went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.
Rookie: Missoula 2 @ Billings 6.Carlos Hernandez wasn't his best on the mound last night and the offense didn't perform until scoring a couple of meaningless runs late. Chuck Taylor went 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI. Denver Chavez also had a couple of hits.
AZL Rookie: Dbacks 4 @ Athletics 3. Ryan Doran had another good start allowing 3 runs over 6 innings on 8 hits and no walks while striking out 8. The bullpen was terrific nailing down the squeaker as they pitched 3 shutout innings with 3 strikeouts. Cesar Carrasco went 2 for 5 and hit his first homer. B.J. Lopez went 2 for 3 with a walk, 2 runs scored, a double and an RBI.
