While neither side displayed their best offensive approach, this one was destined to be close from the get go. Two young up and comers, Patrick Corbin, and Tyson Ross squared off, in a tightly knit, pitchers duel, in Sundays series finale at Chase Field.
Padres got off to an early start, after Chase Headley laced a triple to right in the 1st. Carlos Quentin quiclkly drove him in with a single to left, to take an early, and definite 1-0 lead. After giving up 2 2 out singles to Rivera and Ross, Corbin seemed to settle in nicely, finishing with a solid line of 8 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, and 8 K's.
The Dbacks did get chances to get the run back, but just couldn't cash in. Cliff Pennington had a strong start, at shortstop today, for the club. Going 2 for 3, including a lead-off triple, in the bottom of the 3rd. Things looked promising when, the next batter, Patrick Corbin, shot the ball hard in the air to left. Unfortunately, Carlos Quentin, was charging hard, and made a good effort on the catch, forcing Pennington to stay at 3rd, thrwarting the best scoring chance the Dbacks would have all day.
Tyson Ross, and his slider, took over from there, finishing line 8 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K's. Ross retired 18 of his last 20 batters, before giving way to Huston Street for his 19th save of the year. Final score from Chase Field July 28th, 2013, Dbacks 0, Padres 1.
