Dbacks Minor League Round-Up: McCarthy Starts Rehab Assignment in Reno

Brandon McCarthy started a rehab assignment for Reno yesterday. - USA TODAY Sports

Brandon Mccarthy started on the road back to the Dbacks with his first rehab start for Reno last night. The start did not go very well, but that's the PCL for you I guess. McCarthy got to the 5th inning having surrendered one run on 4 hits, but the 5th proved to be a nightmare. In the inning he allowed a walk, 2 singles, 2 doubles and a home run before he was removed. All the runs were earned and he struck out just one on the night.

On a more encouraging note Archie Bradley made his first start since the All Star Break and was superb throwing 6 shutout innings on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8. Have I mentioned I think he's ready for some big league action?

Snake Stars
3 Stars: Archie Bradley, Mobile 6 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 8 K, 0 ER
2 Stars: Brandon Sinnery, Visalia 6 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 9 K, 0 ER, W (1-0)
1 Star: Matt Davidson, Reno 2 for 5, 2 R, 1 DBL, 1 HR (15), 3 RBI
0 Stars: Garrett Mock, Reno 1/3 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 0 K, 5 ER

Triple A: Reno 8 Las Vegas 15. Brandon Mccarthy's first rehab start wasn't going too badly until the 5th inning when he got beat up for 5 runs. It got even worse for the relief corps in the 6th inning when Garrett Mock and Bryan Woodall surrendered 9 more runs. Matt Davidson did some damage on offense with a double and a home run. Tyler Bortnick had 2 hits including a triple and 3 RBI and Tuffy Gosewisch added a pair of doubles.

Double AL Mobile 1 Montgomery 2. Archie Bradley got cheated out of another win when his 6 shutout innings went for naught. The game got to the 11th after Willy Paredes tossed 2 shutout innings in relief and Jake Barrett added another. But Steve Garrison surrendered a solo home run in the 11th and that was that. Nick Ahmed went 1 for 4 with a walk and 2 stolen bases to pace a meager offense.

High A: Game 1. Visalia 3 @ High Desert 0. Brandon Sinnery got his first start in High A following his promotion during the break and he made the most of it tossing 6 shutout innings on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 9. Pretty impressive debut, especially in High Desert. Jon Griffin went 2 for 2 with a double and 2 walks, and Sean Jamieson went 2 for 2 with a walk and a double.

High A: Game 2. Visalia 5 @ High Desert 7. Conrad Flynn started and couldn't get out of the 4th inning before allowing 5 runs. Anthony Meo made another relief appearance and seems to be getting more comfortable as he retired both batters he faced with one strikeout. Cody Wheeler did not fare as well walking 5 in 2 innings as he allowed 2 runs. Tom Belza tried his best to keep the team in it with a pair of home runs, his 5th and 6th of the year.

Low A: South Bend 4 @ Burlington 1. Kyle Schepel was very solid on the mound allowing just 1 run over 6 innings. Jose Jose pitched a shutout 7th inning, then the game was called due to rain in the 8th and it was made official. The offense came from 3 solo home runs of the bats of Roidany Aguila, Carter Bell (3) and Breland Almadova (6).

Short Season A: Hillsboro 6 Spokane 5. 1st round CBA pick Aaron Blair got his first taste of extended action on the mound yesterday and it was going swimmingly until the 4th inning when he allowed 4 singles and a home run. He did finish the inning for a final line of 4 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 3 K, 5 ER. Fortunately the offense scraped together solo runs in 5 separate innings including one in the 8th and another in the 9th to tie it. The game went all the way to the 13th inning before Brian Billigen singled and Yogey Perez-Ramos doubled him home. Ramos had 3 hits on the day and Cesar Carrasco, who was promoted to Hillsboro from the AZL League earlier in the week, also had 3 hits.

Rookie: Missoula 11 @ Idaho Falls 8. This one was not as close as the score indicates as the offense exploded for 11 runs on 15 hits. Joe Munoz continues to rake going 3 for 5 with a double and 4 RBI. He has 11 RBI in his last three games. Daniel Palka knocked his average up above .300 with a 2 for 3 night that included a double, 3 runs scored and an RBI. Jose Queliz went 2 for 4 with 4 RBI.
