Snake Bytes, 7/20: Deja Vu

USA TODAY Sports

Ian Kennedy was forced to throw 28 pitches in a two-run first inning, however, he shut the door on the Giants after that and went seven strong. The Arizona offense was kept in check, only scattering five hits against San Francisco, and the Diamondbacks took the loss in the second-half opener.

Quick Quotes

"That was one of the better changeups I've thrown," Kennedy said. "I threw a bad one over to Posey and he fouled it off. I said, 'OK, that's one you don't want to throw.'"

Ian Kennedy

"We didn't have any offense going on tonight, and they just shut us down," Gibson said. "I think you have to give [Gaudin] some credit. He was throwing the ball well to both sides of the plate."

Kirk Gibson

"I think that's what separates the best pitchers in the game, is making adjustments, and I did that tonight," he said. "The fastballs were better by the third inning. I was getting ground balls. It allowed me to work better with offspeed pitches."

Beardless Kennedy Strong, but Diamondbacks Held in Check

Ian Kennedy's return to the mound started off a bit rough in the first inning, and it looked like he was on pace to repeat his outing against Milwaukee. However, the now-beardless Kennedy settled in and pitched a total of seven strong innings, retiring 11 of the last 12 he faced. The Diamondback offense did not have such a great post-break debut. Held to only five scattered hits, the Diamondbacks were shut out for the third time this season.

Brandon McCarthy and Trevor Cahill are both making strides to return from the DL by the end of the month while Patrick Corbin is monitored and handled so as to prevent his innings from getting too high.
