Diamondbacks 3, Nationals 2

USA TODAY Sports

The much heralded pitching matchup, though delayed an hour by rain, delivered. Unfortunately, it did not deliver a win for Patrick Corbin.

Corbin and Stephen Strasburg matched each other nearly batter for batter. Corbin had allowed four hits and a walk through the first five innings. Unfortunately, the walk to Adam LaRoche came right in front of an Ian Desmond home run to put the Nationals ahead 2-0 in the 5th. The Diamondbacks scored in similar fashion in the 6th inning. Corbin led off the frame with a hit, and Aaron Hill followed with his first home run since returning from the disabled list to tie the game at 2-2.

Corbin and Strasburg each pitched seven full innings. The bullpens both did their jobs, with Drew Storen striking out the Diamondbacks side in the 8th and David Hernandez doing the same in the 9th for Arizona.

The Diamondbacks finally pushed through in the 11th inning. Miguel Montero led off with a ground rule double, and with runners on the corners and one out, Didi Gregorius put down a perfect safety squeeze bunt to score A.J. Pollock (the pinch runner) and he was even safe at first base, though that didn't end up making a difference.

The Heath Bell Experience came in for the save and worked around a one-out single to close out the win for the Diamondbacks.
