Patrick Corbin's bid to advance to 10-0 was thwarted by Jay Bruce taking the Heath Bell Experience for a ride, but the Diamondbacks rebounded in the bottom half of the inning and scored two off of Aroldis Chapman to take game two, which until the closers came in, had been a pitching duel.

Patrick Corbin took the mound looking to go 10-0 on the season, but surrendered a 2nd inning home run to Jay Bruce. Meanwhile the Reds' Mike Leake remained perfect through 5 2/3 until Corbin took matters into his own hands and slapped a double down the left field line. Gerardo Parra followed that with a home run into the pool area to put the Diamondbacks up 2-1. The score remained 2-1 through 8 innings and Patrick Corbin gave way to Heath Bell after getting strikeouts of Shin-Soo Choo and Joey Votto to end a late Reds scoring threat. Heath Bell came on in relief, walked the first batter on some questionable calls by the umpiring crew, but then could not locate his curve ball pitching to Jay Bruce. Bruce sat on Bell's straight four-seam fastball and crushed his second home run of the day, and his seventh consecutive hit for a home run. Ziegler came in and cleaned up. Arizona was then left to face Reds closer Aroldis Chapman. A hard-hit single that got by Joey Votto, followed by walks to Montero and Ross brought Kubel up with the bases loaded and no one out. A single up the middle on a 1-0 count gave the Diamondbacks a victory and sent the Reds closer to the same fate as the Diamondbacks one - 2 runs allowed and no outs recorded. As Kirk Gibson stated, "Fortunately we had last at-bats today."
