Diamondbacks 11, Reds 5

He's just stretching.... - USA TODAY Sports

Arizona scored four in the fifth and four more in the sixth, as the absent offense returned with a vengeance, plundering 15 hits on their way to beating Johnny Cueto for the first time ever.

It didn't look like this was going to be a laugher for a while, particularly as Wade Miley struggled his way through the middle innings. Not helped by his defense, it took him 104 pitches to get through 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks, as the Reds came back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game in the fifth. The deficit came about courtesy of Gerardo Parra's sixth home-run of the season and a Willie Bloomquist two-run single, but all the momentum seemed to be in the Reds dugout, as the D-backs had to go to their bullpen first.

However, almost immediately, Paul Goldschmidt swatted a two-run homer and the rout was on. We sent nine to the plate in the bottom of the fifth, and eight more in the bottom of the sixth. Goldschmidt added his 19th home-run of the season in the latter frame, part of a three-hit night, and was helped by four hits from Jason Kubel, who scored three times, as well as three hits from Didi Gregorius. Will Harris vultured the win for retiring one batter to end the top of the fifth, and Zeke Spruill made his major-league debut, allowing a leadoff hit in the sixth, but putting up a zero.

It looks likely to extend the Diamondbacks lead to 2.5 games, with the Giants losing again the Marlins - if that holds up, second-place will belong to the Padres. Yep. San Diego. WTF? We'll reconvene tomorrow at Chase: it's an afternoon game, and should be a good, young pitcher's duel, with Mike Leake going for the Reds, and Patrick Corbin for the D-backs. First pitch is 4:15pm on FOX.
