Diamondbacks 12, Cubs 4

Lol - Brian Kersey

Paul Goldschmidt's first career regular season Grand Slam was the initial difference, and then the Diamondbacks just piled on after that.

Paul Goldschmidt broke open a 4-4 tie in the eighth inning with a Grand Slam that gave the Diamondbacks the lead for good in an absolute shellacking of the Cubs to even the series going into tomorrow.

It initially looked bleak. Gerardo Parra lead off the game with a solo shot, his fifth homer of the year and his fourth to lead off a game. However, Ian Kennedy went off the rails a bit in the bottom of the inning, allowing three runs on a sacrifice fly by Alfonso Soriano, a double by Nate Schierholtz, and a groundout by Wellington Castillo. To his credit, Kennedy settled down a bit after that, retiring 17 straight batters after that.

Jeff Samardzija was lights out for the Cubs, striking out 11 in 6 and 1/3rd. However, he was left out in the 7th and the Diamondbacks took advantage of him and James Russel culminating in a bases clearing double by Jason Kubel to make it 4-3. Kennedy gave up a leadoff home run to Schierholtz in the eighth, but retired the next three in a row. Then Carlos Marmol happened, leading to the aforementioned Goldy Grand Slam. The D'Backs would also add four runs in the ninth inning to get to this final score.
