Diamondbacks 3, Marlins 2: Goldschmidt Wakes Us From Our Nightmare

GOD I LOVE THAT MAN - Norm Hall

It was dark, and it was cold, but Paul Goldschmdit lifted us up to where we belong and the Diamondbacks finally won a game for the first time in awhile.

Randall Delgado, he of the that one guy trade, made his first start of the season for the Diamondbacks. There was some trepidation, as he had been hit around a bunch in Reno, and was also hit around a little in a relief appearance against the Cardinals two weeks ago. Delgado, however, proved more than up to the task. How up to the task? He struck out Giancarlo Stanton, the demon that tries to posses us when we enter the fade, twice. As the meme goes "Not bad."

He did, however, run into trouble in the fourth inning. He was able to get two outs with a runner on first, but gave up a triple to Derek Dietrich to make the score 1-0 Marlins.

1-0

Poop. There goes the game.

Goldschmidt happens.

Marlins take an unsurmountable lead, 1-0

"A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings." —Earl Wilson

To our chagrin, the Marlins were not finished that inning. Adeiny Hechavarria hit a sharp single to make it 2-0 in favor of Miami.

Doubly insurmountable

But wait, ye of little faith, there was hope! While it looked like Nathan Eovaldi was doing the thing that every pitcher has been doing against the D'Backs as of late, some people would not stand for it. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Miguel Montero walked. Martin Prado came up and laced a fastball into the left field seats to tie the game up at 2-2, with that being his fifth home run of the season thus far.

From that point, both starters settled down, and both offenses went into a sort of feedback loop. The only other notable thing that occurred between then and the ninth was Jason Kubel throwing out a greedy Hechavarria trying to take third base in the seventh inning.

Brad Ziegler and David Hernandez held the Marlins to 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth. Bottom of the ninth inning, the Marlins would send up... Chad Qualls.

/insert stock sound effect of a woman screaming in a 1950s horror film here.

However, for once, it would not be us making this noise. Paul Goldschmidt lead off the inning. As soon as Bob Brenley said "If he hangs one up on the inside part..." Chad Qualls hung one up on the inside part of the plate and Goldy obliterated it to center field, his first career walk-off home run, and his 17th on the season to snap the four game losing streak for the D'Backs.

No, seriously, he's really really really really really good at Baseball.

At the time of writing, the Giants had just tied it up against the Padres 4-4. No matter the result, the D'Backs will stay alone in first place for at least another day. A Giants win would make said cushion at least 1.5 games. Plan accordingly.

Tomorrow the D'Backs look to take the series against the Marlins in a matinee game that is not televised but people will complain about it even though they're at-work and wouldn't have been able to watch anyway, as they are wont to do.

Be there, if you dare, or care, or stare or...

Hey look , a distracting thing!
