Diamondbacks 1, Padres 4

Denis Poroy

A good outing from Ian Kennedy couldn't overcome another weak offensive performance, and a three-run homer off David Hernandez in the eighth inning proved decisive, as the DIamondbacks were swept for the first time on the road this year.

Arizona got on the board first, a one-out double in the third by Cliff Pennington being followed by Ian Kennedy's first RBI of the season, as he singled to center, scoring Pennington. However, the lead did not last long, as Kennedy then surrendered a home-run to lead off the bottom half of the frame, leveling the scores at one. Neither starter would allow any more damage, though both teams had their chances. the Diamondbacks best shot was likely in the sixth, when they had men on the corners with no outs, but Paul Goldschmidt hit into an inning-ending double-play. The Padres got their first two on in the seventh, but Brad Ziegler relieved Kennedy and extinguished the threat.

David Hernandez pitched the eighth, and allowed a one-out single and a two-out walk, though had a case in the latter at-bat for a called strike three that wasn't. Instead of ending the inning, it allowed Kyle Blanks to crush a three-run homer to left, and leave the Diamondbacks with one chance to comeback. They couldn't, and the loss leaves Arizona only one-half of a game up on Colorado, and San Francisco have a chance to join the Rockies, if they can beat Atlanta in the Sunday night game. Of potential interest, San Diego are now only two back. The Diamondbacks return to Phoenix for a six-game homestand, and will be looking for much better against the Marlins.
