Diamondbacks 5, Dodgers 4

Cody Ross gets one of his three hits tonight. - Lisa Blumenfeld

Arizona's offense, Cody Ross excepted, was largely handcuffed by Clayton Kershaw, and though Wade Miley had a solid outing, it seemed the D-backs would lose their third game in a row. But a four-run ninth turned things around in Los Angeles.

The Diamondbacks managed six hits off Kershaw in his seven innings of work: three of those came off the bat of Cody Ross, who also scored our only run of the night off Kershaw, coming home in the second after he doubled, and Miguel Montero singled him home. That tied the score at one, but Los Angeles took the lead in the fourth, on a broken-bat bleeder that just died before A.J. Pollock could grab it. Miley ended up allowing three runs over six innings, on nine hits and two walks, with four strikeouts. Charles Brewer made his major-league debut in relief, working 1 2/3 scoreless innings, despite loading the bases with no outs in the eighth.

The offense was generally quiet outside of Ross, until the ninth. Gerardo Parra reached base safely three times, with a pair of doubles and a walk. He also made a couple of stellar defensive plays, gunning down a runner who tried to go first to third on a single, and also yanking in the very first pitch of Brewer's major-league career, right at the fence in deep right-field. And he was instrument in an amazing ninth inning rally: with one out and Martin Prado aboard, Parra doubled, igniting a four-run ninth which saw Arizona take the lead, 5-3. Jason Kubel had an RBI single, and Willie Bloomquist drove in the tying and go-ahead runs on an infield hit.

Paul Goldschmidt then added a crucial insurance RBI. I say that, because the Heath Bell Experience allowed a lead-off home-run, then put the tying run on third with no outs. However, a shallow fly, strikeout and ground-ball back to the mound allowed him to pick up the save. JUST... It's the same two teams tomorrow night in Los Angeles, with Ian Kennedy taking on Zack Greinke.
