Diamondbacks 1, Padres 5

Denis Poroy

Ian Kennedy's afternoon was book-ended by all the Padres runs, but the real problem was an offense which, outside of Didi Gregorius, basically didn't bother to show up.

The game got off to a poor start, with the Padres scoring twice in the first, as Ian Kennedy struggled to find his early rhythm. The first three San Diego hitters up, all reached base safely, and two came around to score. Kennedy settled down a bit after that: while his control was still wobbly, he didn't give up any hits from the second through the fifth. Unfortunately, his day ended as roughly as it had begun, with a home-runs to the last two batters faced, and he ended with a line of 5.2 IP, with five runs on five hits and three walks, with five strikeouts.

In the end, those late home-runs proved largely academic, as the hoped-for offensive performance failed to materialize. The Diamondbacks managed four hits, with two of those by Didi Gregorius, who homered in his first at-bat back from the disabled list: it was his third of the season, and his line for Arizona in eight games is .433/.469/.867. Kennedy reached base safely twice, with a double and a walk, and Paul Goldschmidt also picked up a hit and a base on balls.

The full recap will be up shortly, and the Diamondbacks make the short trip up the coast to Los Angeles, for a three-game set against the Dodgers. Trevor Cahill will take on Chris Capuano in that one.
