Diamondbacks 5, Rangers 9

USA TODAY Sports

Well, two out of three ain't bad, am I right? Brandon McCarthy struggled, and by the time the offense found itself, it was too late to comeback, as the Diamondbacks lost the finale (for now) of their series in Texas.

After a scoreless first inning, Brandon McCarthy fell apart, and fell apart quickly, being gone before the end of the third. He was charged with six earned runs in 2.2 innings, on nine hits, with no walks but no strikeouts either. He was relieved by Josh Collmenter, but things didn't go much better: Collmenter was charged with three runs on four hits and a walk in 2.1 innings. After five innings, the Diamondbacks were 9-0 down, and the absence of this game from our TV sets seemed like a mercy killing.

However, the B-bullpen stopped and further bleeding, and the offense made a game of it, scoring three in the sixth, and another couple in the seventh. We were only outhit 15-14 by the Rangers, and got the tying run to the on-deck circle in the ninth, but came up short. Paul Goldschmidt had another monster day, tying a career high with four hits, and there were also multi-hit games for Didi Gregorius, Cliff Pennington, Martin Prado and A.J. Pollock. Pennington came in during an at-bat in the first, Eric Chavez having to be pulled with a strained oblique muscle. He has returned to Phoenix for evaluation, but it doesn't look good at this point.

The team now heads for Wrigley Field, and a three game set against the Cubs, which starts tomorrow afternoon. soco will be along with the full recap, later in the afternoon.
