Preview: Game #50: Diamondbacks vs. Padres

Christian Petersen

Sometimes you catch the bear... And sometimes the bear catches you... After a brisk start last night, Miley's mid-innings meltdown led to a rare blowout loss for Arizona, and means series victory goes to the winner this afternoon.

Some stuff for tomorrow's double-header first [which I just realized kishi covered in its own story while I wrote this! Oh, well...]. It has been announced that Ian Kennedy has a cut finger and so won't be able to start - his place will be taken by Tyler Skaggs, who's being called up from Tucson for the occasion. There's no need for a DL stint, as you are allowed to add a 26th man to the roster for scheduled double-headers such as this. They are currently hoping Kennedy will be able to make his next start, which will be scheduled for Friday. So, the rotation for the next few days is Skaggs then Cahill for the doubleheader, and after Tuesday's off day, it goes McCarthy, Miley, Kennedy, Corbin.

Perhaps most embarrassing is how Kennedy cut his finger:

I can imagine Kirk Gibson's face as he told the press corps that. After all, this is a man who hit an inside-the-park walkoff grand-slam in the World Series after he had to drag himself to the plate with his one remaining functioning limb, following a savage assault by a pack of aardvarks in the dugout. Or something like that: I may be slightly unclear on a couple of the minor details there. On the other hand, somewhere, Brian Anderson - who once famously missed a start due to ironing his own face - smiles and nods in approval. Still, at least it appears it was a manly man's kind of dishwashing injury:

In terms of the standings, we're basically right back where we were when we started the series two days ago, with every team in the NL West having won once and lost once since. So, that means we are in a three-way tie at the top, along with the Giants and the Rockies, who play each other in San Francisco this afternoon. So, if we win today, we'll be tied with whoever wins that game for first; lose, and we'll be one game behind the winner there, and tied with the loser. After last night, I'm hoping for a victory, and Patrick Corbin has been outstanding - his last outing was as good as any recent one by a Diamondbacks starter.

imstillhungtry95 will be guest recapping this one: not sure how much I'll be about, as I've got to try and finish off a 3,000-word essay on the Japanese Female Convict Scorpion series of films, that I've been procrastinating about for ever. But this is a Corbin start, so I might just poke my head round the door and see how he does...
