Snake Bytes, 5/2: Swept out of Town

Norm Hall

For the first time all season, the Diamondbacks lost the final game of a series. Unfortunately, two blown saves in the previous two nights meant that for the first time all season, the Diamondbacks were swept as well. Now the team will finally have a day off after 16 games in 16 days before heading to San Diego to take on the struggling Padres.

Quick Quotes

"I threw the first two exactly where I wanted to and threw the third one exactly where he wanted me to," Hernandez said. "Seems like everything is going bad, but that's the way a season goes sometimes."

David Hernandez after blowing a save in the 8th inning

"That was the worst part about it all," Gibson said. "You aren't helping yourself."

Kirk Gibson on D'backs pitching surrendering 4 walks in the 8th and 9th innings

"Their stuff is still good, it's just pitch location," he said. "I think when you're mentally fatigued, physically fatigued the first month of the season; very rarely do many teams play this many close games in a month, even in blowouts when you're losing sometimes you get a chance to rest some of your key guys, and we haven't had that opportunity."

Kevin Towers speaking about the bullpen being taxed so heavily in April

Paul Goldschmidt entered Wednesday night's game with a gaudy line against Tim Lincecum, having gone 8-14 with 5 HR. In the game, Goldschmidt cracked a 5th inning RBI single, pushing his hitting streak against the Giants' starter to seven games - which just so happens to be the number of games they have faced off against each other.

Here We Go Again

Another close game, another blown save - this time by Diamondbacks set-up man David Hernandez. It's worth noting that the Diamondbacks did actually manage to push across five runs against struggling Giants starter Tim Lincecum, however, free passes and the continued prevalence of gopher balls in "late and close" situations continues to plague the team.

Fatigue, Pennington, Wilson, and a Didi Update

Gibson discusses bullpen fatigue, while Pennington is looking good defensively. Wilson is thankful for playing time, and Didi G looks to be back by the end of the weekend.

Kevin Towers Speaks Out

Kevin Towers, speaking about the rash of blown saves and the shaky bullpen in general continues to stand by the bullpen he has constructed. He points out just how much work the bullpen has been needing to put in. What isn't discussed is the lack of depth from starters in general, or the lack of scoring - both things that could help relieve some of the bullpen fatigue.

Wolfley Likes Diamondbacks' Grit

Local sports pundit, Ron Wolfley is encouraged by the Diamondbacks' April. Despite their well-documented bullpen struggles, the team remains only two games off the pace and is preparing to finally get their first shot at the basement dwelling San Diego Padres.

Gibson and Goldy

Kirk Gibson knows his bullpen needs a rest. Paul Goldschmidt knows the team isn't going to be able to get by on the league average of 4.26 runs per game.

Bullpen Disarray

Tyler Lockman of Fox Sorts Arizona has a column about the Diamondbacks' bullpen woes. However, he does note the effectiveness of Josh Collmenter, Mark Reynolds, and Tony Sipp.
