Diamondbacks Ups and Downs: Trends for the Opening Series

Christian Petersen

Well, here we are again! Another season, and another Thursday, and that means, it's time for Ups and Downs! A weekly analysis on how the Diamondbacks performed in the past week. In this case, the Small Sample Size disclaimer is in affect because, well, we've only played three games...

Starting Rotation

Player Trend Notes
Ian Kennedy
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png
Kennedy had a fabulous Opening Day start - 7 innings, two hits, two runs, and eight strikeouts! A great job by our ace.
Trevor Cahill
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png
Cahill was his usual Cahill self, pitching just shy of a "quality start" with three earned runs in 5.2 innings. He struggled in that 6th inning, allowing a Matt Holliday home run and two baserunners after that. He was bailed out of the inning by Tony Sipp.
Brandon McCarthy
down
McCarthy really only struggled in one inning last night against the Cardinals. Outside of the 3rd inning, he allowed only two hits (well, until the 6th, when he allowed two more). In the third, however, and mostly with two outs, he allowed five hits and four runs. Ouch.
Wade Miley
Has not yet pitched.
Patrick Corbin
Has not yet pitched. Was almost needed to play left field, though...

Bullpen

Player Trend Notes
Heath Bell
down
The less said about his attempt to pitch the 7th inning on Tuesday, the better. Hint: his ERA is currently 81.
Josh Collmenter
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png
Collmenter not only pitched a scoreless inning and two thirds on Tuesday, he pitched five innings in long relief last night. He allowed one run and struck out five batters in 78 pitches to earn the win in the 16th inning. A "quality start" for sure, and better numbers - including more pitches - than the game's initial starter, McCarthy!
David Hernandez
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png
Hernandez pitched two lights-out innings, striking out three. I hope to be able to use the phrase "lights-out" a lot with DHern.
J.J. Putz
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png
J.J. was going to pitch last night regardless of the score. He came into the 9th in a tie game, walked the leadoff man, and got the next three batters no problem (including 2 Ks).
Matt Reynolds
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png
Reynolds has impressed so far - three innings across the two games, no hits, no walks, and one strikeout.
Tony Sipp
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png
Sipp's first appearance was fine, getting out of Cahill's jam on Tuesday night. But he allowed two runs inherited from McCarthy to score in the 6th inning last night, and then one of his runs scored after Ziegler came in. It's kind of hard to tell with Sipp right now...
Brad Ziegler
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png
Brad pitched a clean inning on Opening Day, but last night he allowed one of Sipp's runners to score and then one of his own the next inning. Five of his nine batters did hit ground balls though, so I'm not worried.

Starting Lineup

Player Trend Notes
Gerardo Parra
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png
star
Parra is off to a hot start in the leadoff position. He's 8-for-16 with three doubles and a triple, he nearly hit for the cycle last night, and lead off yesterday's game with his first home run of the season.
Martin Prado
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png
Martin is making a good impression so far, going 2-for-5 on Monday and 3-for-7 on Wednesday (but 0-for-4 on Tuesday). His two-run home run in the 6th inning yesterday tied the game.
Aaron Hill
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png
A decent series for Hill, collecting four hits and one RBI.
Miguel Montero
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png
Miggy went 4-for-12 against the Cardinals, including 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the losing effort on Tuesday.
Paul Goldschmidt
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png
Goldy has struggled a little bit, getting just one hit in the first two games. He had two singles and a two-run home run in his first three at-bats last night, but went 0-for-5 with 3 Ks the rest of the way.
Jason Kubel
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png
Jason went just 3-for-12 in the series (1-for-7 last night), but his one walk last night lead to the walkoff win in the 16th inning.
A.J. Pollock
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png
A.J. was en fuego on Opening Day, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. But he is 0-for-5 since then.
Cliff Pennington
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png
The hero of Canton, the man they call.... wait, that's not right. Pennington waited until late last night - the 12th inning - to get his first hit of the season, and got the walk-off single to score Kubel in the 16th. He also made some great defensive plays.

Bench

Player Trend Notes
Eric Chavez
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png
Chavez went 1-for-4 in two games as a pinch hitter/defensive replacement. He singled and scored one of the many tying runs last night. He would've played longer but he got nailed in the elbow by Mitchell Boggs and left in the 13th.
Eric Hinske
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png
Hinske appeared in all three games against St. Louis as a pinch hitter. He worked a walk last night.
Alfredo Marte
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png
Marte made his major league debut on Tuesday, and pinch hit on Wednesday, but has yet to collect his first hit.
Wil Nieves
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png
Struck out as a pinch hitter in the 11th inning last night.
Josh Wilson
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png
The last guy on the bench in last night's marathon was needed to replace Chavez defensively. He then went 0-for-1.

Disabled List

Player Trend Notes
Willie Bloomquist
bandaid
No news on Willie, battling a similar intercostal strain as last year. It's one of those injuries where rest is the best medicine.
Adam Eaton
bandaid
Out at least another 4 weeks with his strained left elbow.
Didi Gregorius
bandaid
He is headed to Triple-A Reno for a rehab assignment.
Daniel Hudson
bandaid
Dan started throwing off the mound in Spring Training. While the team is away, he's working with the Extended Spring Training guys.
Cody Ross
bandaid
Starting a rehab assignment with Class A Visalia this weekend.

Stats run from 4/01 - 4/03.
