Rockies 6, Diamondbacks 3

USA TODAY Sports

"The Big Inning" continues to plague Diamondbacks starter Brandon McCarthy. He gave up six runs in six innings. Arizona had plenty of chances but could not capitalize.

Brandon McCarthy seems to have angered the BABIP gods. Out of the six runs he allowed, five of them were runners who had reached on singles or scored on singles. Three singles in the first inning scored the first two runs. Arizona came back in the second and third innings to take a 3-2 lead, and McCarthy settled down. He had retired 10 of 11 batters between the first and fourth innings, but it fell apart in the fifth. With the bases loaded, McCarthy struck out Carlos Gonzalez to get the second out of the inning, and on the very next pitch, Troy Tulowitzki smashed a double to deep center field, clearing the bases of Rockies.

Arizona had chances to score more than the three runs they did, stranding two runners on base in both the seventh and eighth innings. But the most important news to come out of tonight is the health of Didi Gregorius. He was hit in the head by a Josh Outman 93-mph fastball in the seventh, and eventually walked off the field under his own power. He is, thus far, listed as day-to-day with a right temple contusion.

The Rockies snap the Diamondbacks' three-game win streak with this 6-3 loss.
