Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 4

The Diamondbacks scored two in the ninth to overturn a one-run deficit, and avoid the sweep at Coors Field.

The Diamondbacks made Juan Nicasio work in the early stages but were not able to get any hits. Initially, neither were Colorado, but the Rockies strung together four consecutive singles in the third inning, and scored three times, aided by Arizona outfielders air-mailing in some throws. Poor Brandon McCarthy got BABIP'd to death there, but the fourth run he allowed, a solo shot off the bat of Troy-bot was all his. He ended with a line of eight hits, no walks and a pair of strikeouts in six innings, with four runs, all earned. While that did reduce his season ERA, it's still a little north of seven.

The visitors' offense still seem to be catching up with them, and out first hit wasn't until the fifth inning, when Didi Gregorius clobbered his second home-run, to put us on the board. A Paul Goldschmidt RBI single pulled Arizona to within one run, and after the Rockies restored the advantage, a Cody Ross double brought the D-backs back to one down in the eighth. Gregorius singled to lead things off, and an A.J. Pollock chopper bounced over the infield for a double. Productive outs by Alfredo Marte and Gerardo Parra drove in the tying runs, and J.J. Putz had a slightly shaky ninth, stranding the tying run at third.

The road-trip improves to 2-4, but the Diamondbacks will still likely be looking for better output offensively, when they move on to AT&T Park for a three-game series against the Giants, starting tomorrow night.
