Dbacks Minor League Round-Up 4/16: Davidson Homers Again

After a rocky first game back from a minor injury Matt Davidson rebounded with his 3rd homer of the season and a double in Reno's 5-2 win last night. Davidson got off to a hot start going 9 for 21 in his first 5 games, then cooled going 1 for 13 in his next four. He has a nice line going so far with a triple slash of .316/.422/.579 in his first 10 games. The K rate is on the high side at around 28% but a good walk rate of 15% is offsetting some of that. He's doing what was predicted of him even if a few scouts are giving him bad marks. His 3 errors in that stretch is what some point to as one of his primary negatives. Those have to abate at some point to earn a full-time job at third base.

Reno was glad to see Sacramento get out of town after sweeping four from them and they got a much-needed win against Colorado 5-2 behind Chase Anderson. Mobile went down as David Holmberg couldn't overcome a first-inning error and surrendered 6 runs over 6 innings, only 2 earned. Visalia lost a squeaker in a battle of bullpens 4-3. And South Bend upped their record to 7-2 behind another strong start by Cody Wheeler.

Snake Stars
3 Stars: Cody Wheeler, South Bend 5 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 9 K, 2 ER
2 Stars: Matt Davidson, Reno 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 DBL, 1 HR (3), 1 RBI
1 Star: Chase Anderson, Reno 6 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 7 K, 2 ER, W (1-2)
0 Stars: Brent Clevlen, Mobile 0 for 4, 2 K

Triple A: Reno 5 Colorado 2. Chase Anderson got Reno back on track with a good outing that combined with a little offense was enough to end their losing streak. Anderson went 6 innings allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7. Matt Davidson continued his good start to the season with a double and a home run in four trips. The bullpen was also very good with Joe Paterson delivering 2 shutout innings and Matt Gorgen and Will Harris adding one each with Harris getting the save. Taylor Harbin had a good night going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and an RBI.

Double A: Mobile 3 @ Montgomery 9. David Holmberg had a rough first inning when he couldn't overcome a Nick Ahmed error and allowed a grand slam before it was over. He settled down after that and got through 6 innings eventually allowing 2 more runs. He has started the season in very un-Holmberg-like fashion with 10 walks in his first 10 innings. Consider that last year he only walked 37 in 173 innings. Not much offense to speak of other than a Nick Evans solo home run. Evans is hitting .429 to start the season with a 1.095 OPS.

High A: Visalia 3 @ Modesto 4. The Rawhide battled back late with single runs in the 8th and 9th inning to tie it. But 3 singles in the bottom of the 9th off Blake Cooper gave Modesto the walk-off win 4-3. Keith Hessler started and was very good going 6 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks with 8 strikeouts. Yazy Arbelo had a 2 for 3 night with a double and an RBI. Gerson Montilla added 2 hits including a double.

Low A: South Bend 3 Fort Wayne 2. South Bend continued its winnings ways behind 5 good innings from lefty Cody Wheeler who allowed just 1 hit and struck out 9. They're still being cautious about his innings but that should change as the weather warms. The bullpen added 4 shutout innings as Silver Hawks pitchers struck out 14 in all. Alex Glenn had 2 hits and 2 runs and is hitting .310 to start the season. Frazier Hall and Pedro Ruiz both added a couple of singles in the team's 9-hit effort.
