Reno made it a clean sweep for Dbacks teams in action with their offense in an 11-3 wipeout of Salt Lake that featured 3 home runs including another by red-hot prospect Matt Davidson.
3 Stars: Jesse Darrah, South Bend 7 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 8 K, 0 ER, W (1-0)
2 Stars: Andrew Chafin, Visalia 7 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 10 K, 0 ER, W (1-1)
1 Star: Matt Davidson, Reno 2 for 3, 3 BB, 1 HR, 3 RBI
0 Stars: Brandon Drury, South Bend 0 for 4, 3 K
Triple A: Reno 11 @ Salt Lake 3. Nelson Figueroa took the hill for Reno (he of WBC fame) and wasn't very sharp to start when he allowed 3 runs in the first. But he held it together with 3 subsequent shutout innings while the offense got untracked. The Aces scored in each of the first six innings led by Matt Davidson's 2 hits and 3 walks including his second homer of the year. Davidson is sporting a 1.234 OPS through the first 5 games and 6 RBI. Other Aces with multiple hits on the night included Chris Owings (with a triple), Kila Ka'aihue (with his 2nd homer), Tuffy Gosewitch (with his 1st homer) and Brad Snyder. The bullpen added 5 shutout innings including two by Garrett Mock, two by Matt Gorgen and one by newly-acquired Will Harris.
Double A: Mobile. Off-day. David Holmberg gets the start tonight.
High A: Visalia 3 Bakersfield 0. That was the Andrew Chafin we all know and love as he threw 7 shutout innings on 4 hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts. Apparently he made some adjustments from Opening day and he's also been working on a change-up for that all-important third pitch. Check out this article from MiLB which has post-game quotes from Chafin and some analysis on his development. Kaleb Fleck pitched a scoreless 9th for his first save. Evan Marzilli paced the offense with 2 hits including a double. Cody Ross drove in the first run of the game with an infield single and Raywilly Gomez followed with a 2-run single, which is all the offense the Rawhide would need or get.
Low A: South Bend 1 Dayton 0. As good As Chafin was for Visalia, Jesse Darrah did him one better with 7 shutout innings of his own on just one hit and no walks while striking out 8. It was the best outing as a professional by Darrah that I can recall. The offense managed just one run so the pressure was squarely on the bullpen to deliver the victory. And they did come through as Chris Capper pitched a scoreless 8th and RJ Hively threw a perfect 9th for the save. Socrates Brito drove in the solo run as part of his 3-hit night. He's batting .400 so far on the young season. Darrah has yet to surrender a run in 13 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits and striking out 12.
