Diamondbacks add Ender Inciarte, Bo Schultz to 40-man roster, DFA Tony Sipp

USA TODAY Sports

The Arizona Diamondbacks have selected the contracts of outfielder Ender Inciarte and right-handed pitcher Bo Schultz from Triple-A Reno and designated left-handed pitcher Tony Sipp for assignment, according to D-backs’ Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Enciarte, 23, spent the majority of 2013 with Double-A Mobile, hitting .281 (133-for-473) with 17 doubles, five home runs, 25 RBI and 43 stolen bases and was named to the Southern League midseason All-Star Team. He was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2012 Rule 5 Draft but was returned to the D-backs on April 4 without appearing in a Major League game. Inciarte is a career .282 hitter (608-for-2,153) with 98 doubles, 26 triples, 10 home runs, 160 RBI and 154 stolen bases over 6 Minor League seasons in the D-backs' organization.

The Venezuela native was signed by Arizona as a non-drafted free agent on May 25, 2008, and as we've mentioned before, he's currently putting up solid numbers for Aguilas de Zulia in the winter league there. Enciarte is hitting .310, with a .759 OPS and ten stolen bases in a dozen attempt. Putting him on the 40-man roster will prevent a team from following in the Phillies' footsteps and selecting him in this year's Rule 5 draft, which will take place during the winter meetings on December 12.

Schultz, 28, combined to go 5-6 with one save and a 3.35 ERA (39 ER in 104.2 IP) in 37 games (16 starts) with Triple-A Reno and Double-A Mobile last season. He posted a 2.96 ERA (27 ER in 82.0 IP) and a .208 average against as a starting pitcher, and went 2-0 with a 0.66 ERA (1 ER in 13.2 IP) in three postseason starts with the BayBears, as they came up just short of the Southern League title. Over six Minor League seasons in the Oakland A's (2008-11) and D-backs' (2012-13) organizations, Schultz has gone 27-21 with 14 saves and a 3.75 ERA (168 ER in 402.2 IP) in 208 games (27 starts).

He was signed by Arizona as a Minor League free agent on March 8, 2012. The pitcher also performed well in winter ball, being a regular starter for the Salt River Rafters as they also just missed out on a third successive Arizona Fall League championship appearance. Schultz went 3-0 in seven starts with the Rafters, posting a 3.09 ERA with a K:BB ratio of 28:7 over 32 innings.

Sipp, 30, was 3-2 with a 4.78 ERA (20 ER in 37.2 IP) in 56 games with Arizona in 2013. He was acquired by the D-backs in a three-team trade with the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians on Dec. 20, 2012, and this is the second time he has been DFA'd by the Diamondbacks: that already happened to Sipp in August, and he passed through without being claimed, and was subsequently assigned to Reno. It doesn't look like he'll be hanging around this time, and the move now leaves Joe Thatcher as the only left-hander likely at this point to be in our bullpen next season.

The D-backs' 40-man roster is now at 40.
