D-backs Avoid Arbitration with Matt Reynolds

USA TODAY Sports

It probably doesn't matter much - at least for next year - but news today that the Arizona Diamondbacks have avoided arbitration and agreed to a one-year contract with a club option for 2015 with left-handed pitcher Matt Reynolds, according to D-backs Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers.

Reynolds, who turned 29 on Oct. 2, went 0-2 with a pair of saves and a 1.98 ERA (six ER allowed in 27.1 IP) in 30 relief appearances in 2013. He posted a career-high 22-game scoreless streak from Sept. 19, 2012-May 11, 2013, covering a total of 19 innings, and including a club-record-tying 19 scoreless outings to start the season. Reynolds was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 10 with a strained left elbow, and when rehab wasn't able to resolve the issue, underwent Tommy John surgery on Sept. 24 in Pensacola, performed by specialist Dr. James Andrews.

Reynolds was acquired from the Rockies in a trade for Ryan Wheeler and was expected to become the primary left-handed reliever for Arizona this season. He was living up to hopes until his injury, which will almost certainly sideline him for the entire 2014 campaign. This was his first year of arbitration: the cost of the deal hasn't been announced at this point, but one would imagine, based on his non-availability, that it will be relatively manageable. Makes sense to have a team option for 2015 as well, because that will protect the team in the event of a major relapse down the road, such as that suffered by Daniel Hudson.
