The Diamondbacks wore black today. Was that so they could become the reaper and take one from the Giants? Or maybe it was to show how dead this season really is. Regardless of the reason, the feast or famine offense would feast today, scoring many runs and allowing only 2. Are you surprised? Read on for the details...
Patrick Corbin pitched 8 solid innings today. This was the deepest he's pitched into a major league game. He had a lot of run support this time out but don't let that fool you. He really looked good out there. He ended the day with this line:
8.0 IP, 8H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 SO.
I won't say he was never in trouble, but when he was he made the pitches he needed to make. That's what I want to see out of a rookie. How will he handle pressure? He struck out heart-of-the-order-guys to prevent runs in more than one inning. Very good stuff!
For the offense, there were quite a few bright spots. The pick of the litter was Justin Upton who went 2 for 4 with 1 BB and 3 RBIs. He showed some power today, hitting balls off the wall and out of the park. Great to see him performing well!
So now for the bloody details. Off we go:
We started off the first inning on the wrong foot, allowing a ground rule double to the leadoff man, Angel Pagan. Gerardo Parra really gave it a good effort to try to get to the ball just missed it and it bounded into the bullpen.Buster Posey (hence forth referred to as "Poser") decided that he just didn't have enough RBIs to solidify his MVP bid, so he singled in the run. The only thing impressive we were able to muster in our half of the 1st was a strikeout/throwout DP.
DBacks 0, Bad Guys 1 (Are you surprised?)
The second inning saw another leadoff double by the Giants. However, Corbin got 2 strikeouts and a groudout to strand the loser...err...I mean runner. In our half of the inning, Miguel Montero walked, Paul Goldschmidt, Ryan Wheeler and Cody Ransom struck out. Are we having fun yet??? Are you surprised yet?
In the 3rd, we actually turned a DP when Brad Ziegler wasn't on the mount. Not sure how long it's really been since that happened but it feels like a long time. Combined with a strikeout of Pablo Sandoval, we snuck back into the dugout unscathed. In our half of the inning, Parra grounded to short and Corbin struck out. With two outs, I was about to go grab a sandwich when Eaton walked and Hill singled up the middle. Then the unthinkable happened. Upton
struck out hit the ball off the wall to score Eaton and Hill on a very nice double! Montero popped out to end the fun.
DBacks 2, Suck-a-fishies 1 (Actually, I'm kinda surprised!)
For the 4th inning, Poser led off with a walk. This must have really made Corbin mad because he hit Hunter Pence to have runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out. Would we give up the lead just after taking it back? I don't want to watch. The suspense is killing me!! But wait, we turned ANOTHER double play?? No, I must be dreaming. We relly did turn another DP. WOW! I kinda feel good right now. Then Brandon Belt hit a ball down to Goldy who missed the ball and allowed the double, scoring Poser. If I were a color, I'd be unimpressed. Christian flew out to CF to end the top of the inning.
Now it's our turn, you bad nasty evil guys! An error by Arias (his name kinda eludes to this) allowed Goldy to reach 1st. Then Wheeler struck out. Ransom hit a double off the wall to have runners on 2nd and 3rd. Parra was intentionally walked to load the bases for Corbin. Our lean mean pitching machine HIT A TRIPLE TO CLEAR THE BASES! (CY, are you taking notes???) His first major league triple. Eaton walked to put runners at the corners which ended the day for Vogelsong. If I were there, I would point and laugh at him. Loux was called in and Hill promptly hit another double to score Corbin and Eaton. Upton walked putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Miggy grounded out but it moved Hill and Upton up a base. With two outs, Goldy flew out to end the inning.
DBacks 7, The guys that just might lose 2 (Extremely surprised!)
Now for the 5th inning. Pill and Pagan grounded out and Scutaro Flew out. a 1-2-3 inning? I didn't see that coming. Usually we would give up about 4 runs to keep the game close enough to lose. Maybe we actually can win? Keep reading to find out! In our half of the inning Wheeler lined out to left. Ransom grounded out. Then Parra hit one off the pitcher (Penny), and reached first since Pablo wasn't able to make a play on the ricochet. Unfortunately, Corbin struck out this time...ending the inning.
In the 6th, Corbin was still pitching. He's looking good so far. How will he fare in this nefarious inning. Corbin got Pablo to ground out to 3rd (nice play by Wheeler). Then Posery lined to 1st (nice play by Goldy). Pence singled but it was for naught as Arias grounded out to end the top of the inning. The top of our order up and hope filling out thoughts, Eaton flew out to left and Hill lined out to short. Then Upton
struck out hit a HOME RUN Miggy struck out to end the inning.
DBacks 8, Those haters from the Bay 2 (ok, so I can't really be surprised for an entire game...)
Would Gibby put Corbin out in the 7th inning? Yes, he sure would. He only has 66 pitches to start the inning. Corbin got Belt to fly out on 2 pitches, Christian to fly out on 1 pitch, and Peguero to strike out on 3 pitches. That'll do pig, that'll do. With us on offense, we had Goldy to ground out, Wheeler walked, Ransom struck out. Then Parra walked which brought up Corbin. Would you believe me if I told you he hit an RBI single? Well you better because that's exactly what happened! 4RBIs now on the day. After a couple walks the bases were loaded for Upton, who promptly struck out.
DBacks 10, They might be Giants 2
Corbin still pitching into the eighth inning. Theriot singled to first. Scutaro lined to left for a double, putting runners on 21nd and 3rd with no outs. Pablo struck out for the first out. Poser would certainly not let those runners just sit there would he? He sure would! He also struck out. Corbin looks very good out there. Then Pence flew out to end the inning. In our half, Miggy struck out, Nieves (replacing Goldy) grounded out and Wheeler lined out to center
The ninth saw Collmenter come in to relieve Corbin. Josh got Arias to fly out on one pitch, then Belt to ground out on 2 pitches and Christian walked but it didn't matter because Peguero struck out. AND THAT'S THE GAME!
It's Sunday, so it was obviously a bit slow. Only 13 people showed up for today's rout: Jim McLennan, Clefo, imstillhungry95, snakecharmer, onedotfive, grimmy01, AzDbackfanInDc, hotclaws, xmet, asteroid, soco, Dan Strittmatter, and GuruB. Only 341 total and nobody over the century mark, but ish95 had nearly twice as many as his nearest competitor.
Comment of the day was a tough one. I almost accepted a bribe on this one but thought better of it (hey, it's my character at stake here...!). Instead, COTD goes to onedotfive for this gem:
Thank you to the 'Pit for letting me do one of these again. Very cool! I'm now 2-0 on guest recaps so maybe I'll sign up for another so we can win one more game before the end of the year.
Tomorrow is an off day so go out and find something else to do....geesh! :)
