Archie Bradley's first full season in the minors is now in the books and overall it was a successful one. He had some bumps along the way, particularly an extended stretch mid-season in which he was having major control issues. But he made a lot of progress down the stretch and finished on a strong note. He ended the season 12-6 with a 3.84 ERA and 152 strikeouts in 136 innings. The 84 walks are a little disturbing but in spite of that bloated total he still managed a WHIP of 1.25. I imagine he'll get a nice long rest and then spend the off-season working on his fitness and building on his secondary pitches, especially in throwing them for strikes. He'll start next year in Visalia most likely where the hitters are more advanced and he'll be pressed to start lowering the walk totals or he'll get beat up at times. Andrew Chafin is a case in point. But there's no reason to think he won't make progress in that area and the rate at which he does will determine how fast he gets to the top. I'm inclined to think he'll spend the entire season in High A if for no other reason than to get a higher tally of innings under his belt with a goal of somewhere around 150-160, as well as to work on getting deeper into games.

Triple A: Reno 5 Fresno 4. Reno reduced their magic number to 1 with the win and a Colorado Springs loss. Timely hitting and a solid bullpen effort were the keys to the victory. Daniel Cabrera started and was decent in allowing 3 runs on 7 hits and a walk in 5 innings. Sam Demel pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief without allowing a baserunner and striking out 3. Brent Clevlen had 2 doubles and 2 RBI, and A.J. Pollock had 2 doubles with 1 RBI.
Double A: Mobile is scheduled for a series in Mississippi but they are obviously getting drenched by the hurricane. We'll see what tomorrow brings.
High A: Visalia 0 Bakersfield 4. Willy Paredes had a shutout going through 5 innings but the 6th was another story when he allowed 4 runs. The offense was shut out on 5 hits with 2 coming from Michael Freeman. We've been hyping Keon Broxton a lot lately but he's hit another mini-slump with 15 strikeouts in his last 6 games.
Low A: South Bend 9 Lansing 3. In what was likely Archie Bradley's final start of the year he was very good going 6 innings while allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks with 7 strikeouts. That was plenty good as the offense was rolling, especially the bottom of the order where the last 3 spots went 9 for 12 with 5 runs scored. They were led by Raul Navarro's perfect night of 4 for 4 with a triple, 2 runs scored and an RBI. Roidany Aguila went 3 for 4 and Eric Grof went 2 for 4, all singles.
Short Season A: Yakima 1 Vancouver 7. Daniel Watts was terrific for 5 innings allowing 1 run and striking out 8. But the bullpen was awful behind him as they let in 3 in the 8th and 3 in the 9th. It wasn't an important game as Yakima prepares for the playoffs so they most likely resorted to the bottom of the bullpen rather than wear out the strength of the bullpen. Daniel Watts is now on schedule to pitch the deciding game 3 (if necessary) in their scheduled playoff series against Boise that starts Monday.
Rookie: Missoula 9 @ Billings 6. Round 1 of this critical 4-game series with Billings goes to the Osprey and they moved into a tie for 1st place. It wasn't looking good early as Billings jumped out to a 6-0 lead through 5 innings as Yoimer Camacho wasn't on his game. But in the 7th Missoula exploded for 9 runs and the bullpen provided 4 scoreless innings of relief for the big win. In that 7th inning Jake Lamb led off with his 8th homer and added a 2-run single. Michael Perez also singled twice in the inning with a run scored and an RBI. It's a fun time in Missoula right now and they still have 3 more games with Billings in this series and then end the season with a 2-game set in Missoula.
