It's likely that the Rangers will pursue a trade for the Diamondbacks'
Justin Upton this offseason. Upton would join Mike Olt and Jurickson
Profar as a part of the team's future offensive core. Of course, Texas
will be facing the potential losses of Josh Hamilton and Mike Napoli as
free agents and Nelson Cruz will be entering his final year under
contract. In a deal for Upton, the D'Backs would likely have interest in
shortstop Elvis Andrus.
Not exactly breaking news as the teams discussed this in late July but
Texas wanted their crew together for a WS run this year. Profar will
likely be ready for next season and Upton (assuming he bounces back) can
replace some of Hamilton's power in the OF.
The Diamondbacks would be getting (according to Fangraphs) the best SS in
baseball. Andrus has a WAR of 4.1 and slash of .298/.366/.391 with good
defense. Elvis turns 24 years old tomorrow and has 2 years/11.2M remaining
after this season. Andrus is a star SS but probably won't reach Upton's
offensive impact if J-Up can return to 2011 form or close to it. Assuming
he bats leadoff the lineup could look something like this...
Suppose there could be other changes made by KT. I know some would
rather send out prospects for a player of Andrus' caliber but he's arguably
the best player at his position in the AL and would require more than
Skaggs etc.. Our young & talented rotation would remain intact. Thoughts
on the potential swap?
