In long-rumored news made official, Diamondbacks prospect Tyler Skaggs will make his major league debut on Wednesday in the first game of the day-night doubleheader against the Miami Marlins, manager Kirk Gibson announced this afternoon.
Skaggs was drafted in 2009 by the Angels and acquired by the Diamondbacks as the key piece in the 2010 Dan Haren-Joe Saunders trade. He played for High A and Double-A in 2011, and Double-A Mobile and Triple-A Reno in 2012. This season, he has a combined 9-6 record and 2.87 ERA; in Reno, he is 4-2 with a 2.91 ERA and 45 strikeouts and 16 walks in nine starts.
Tyler Skaggs started the All Star Futures Game last year at Chase Field. He also participated this year in Kansas City after Trevor Bauer was called up to the big leagues.
A rule in the latest MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement allows a team to bring up a 26th man for double-headers that are scheduled more than 48 hours in advance, so no corresponding roster move will need to be made to accommodate Skaggs.
