4 guys
Parker was 26 though the analysis about him made me laugh.
I also find Skaggs's ranking interesting
Seeing as BA ranked Bradley above him in the top 10.
I just bought BA’s 2012 Prospect Handbook today, and their report on Bradley is positively glowing. It is strange that Skaggs placed ahead of him, but its probably because the top 100 list is a composite list based off of different writers’ individual lists.

yeah i think that's why
the team rankings are covered by individual writers, and the composite Top 100 list is based on like eight different writers (none of whom actually ranked any individual teams, i believe)

+1
in terms of probably pure excitement/suspense from watching prospect development in the minors next year, it’s going to be most interesting following him and Archie

If Davidson were in the Padres Organization
Would he still rank in top 100 ?
I think he actually gets a bump because he is considered the best position prospect in the system.

Entirely possible
But it’s also possible that everyone sees Arizona’s system and thinks “holy crap there’s nothing but pitching here”, and proceeds to dismiss the bats.
Who knows? Certainly not me. I got a C+ in Intro to Psychology. :-)

I honestly don't know
The thing is, the prospects I like in that system, are not the same ones that BA likes apparently.
If I had to rank the Padres system, I’d probably go Grandal, Erlin, Alonso, Wieland in that order
after that (and trying to fit Davidson in), it’s a close tossup between Davidson, Liriano, and Gyorko for me.
Kelly and Spangenberg would not make the Top 100 list for me, whereas they did for BA. On the other hand, Erlin and Wieland are definitely Top 100 for me, and BA didn’t have them there. As for Davidson/Liriano/Gyorko, I think they are all borderline Top 100 guys.
I guess as for Davidson/Gyorko, since they are right next to each other on the list, and both are 3B with question marks, I just think Davidson can hit better in AA at the age of 21 than Gyorko did this year at the age of 22.

Spangenberg belongs
I know you love your numbers, but relying solely on them at the Low-A level is a bit nuts. Upper levels? Fine, I see the value. Midwest League? At age 18, Miguel Cabrera hit .268/.328/.382 in a full season at Kane County, and scouts were nuts about him. Two years later, he split his age-20 season at Double-A Carolina (hit .365/.429/.609) and the major leagues.
At Low-A, truly elite numbers and ARL figures have significance in a positive fashion, but if the numbers aren’t there and scouting reports are, the lack of numbers becomes somewhat trivial.
Just my opinion. Loved watching Spangenberg, kid is going to be really good.

meh
i know you like Spangenberg
it’s not just about numbers, though that’s definitely a part of it. the Midwest League numbers were just pedestrian for a 20 year old. if scouts are nuts about an 18 year old, i’ll pay more attention. less so if it’s a 20 year old in A-ball.
it’s also about pedigree though. i just don’t think the likelihood of so many teams passing on him, and then pretty much every analyst (except the Padres themselves) were saying the Padres pick was a safety pick, and now he’s turning out to actually be a great player? i don’t think this is a case where people are missing on Trout. projecting a 20 year old is difficult, but quite a bit easier than projecting an 18 year old. you think all the scouts of all those teams got it wrong, and that we now all realize it a couple of months later?
i just don’t buy it.

It's not like Spangenberg was trash
He was a top-20/top-30 name in the draft. Probably not top-10, but while the fact he was overdrafted shouldn’t inflate his value, it also shouldn’t deflate it.
It’s also such a small sample… that’s a major issue for me.

Cabrera vs. lg avg
At age 18 in the Midwest league his .709 OPS was only 5 points less than league avg .714, and he was 18 in a league where the avg batter age was 21.6
IOW, he was as good as the average player 4 years his senior while still a teenager.
Thats like a 950 OPS in dog years….or something like that.

Awesome.
Can’t argue with the rankings assigned to our trio of pitching prospects, but it’s a nice surprise to see Davidson in the top 100.

I'll argue with it

So, just curious
What is Parker’s ranking?
Anyway, really exciting to see Davidson make it! Good for him! I am so excited about Bauer and Skaggs. Hope to see them get a chance to pitch for the DBacks sometime this season. Also really excited to watch Bradley’s development.
I should have gotten interested in prospect watching earlier. It is pretty fun.
Poor Borchering.
He needs to step up big time now that he’s out of the spotlight of a top prospect ranking otherwise I don’t know haha. Career back-up?

Even if a regular job doesn't pan out
He could at least be a Matt Stairs type. Perhaps a bit less prolific in the history books for pinch-hitters, of course, but I think the idea is there (fill-in at 1B/LF/RF/DH/PH). All is not totally lost (and this isn’t saying that a regular job is necessarily not going to happen, either).

yeah
i was talking to someone, and said that i still think Borch has like around a 20% chance to be a 2 WAR LF type or better
by blue bulldog on Feb 23, 2012 10:57 AM EST up reply actions
Borchering will do more than that...but it won't be here.
He will be traded before 2012 is finished…..and it will be a trade the team will regret, in my opinion.

you really think he will be traded?
i feel like that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for the team….but i dunno

He is never mentioned or talked about by KT......ever.
He will need to be lights out from the beginning of the season to restablish himself in the eyes of the organization.
