Diamondbacks Sign Brandon McCarthy

Stay connected for news and updates

Joy R. Absalon-US PRESSWIRE

As first reported by John Gambadoro, the Diamondbacks appear to have signed free-agent pitcher Brandon McCarthy, pending a physical. The 29-year old pitched for Oakland last year, going 8-6 with a 3.24 ERA in 18 starts

Nick Piecoro broke the news of Arizona's interest in McCarthy last week, and it didn't take long after the winter meetings for that interest to become a reality. Jon Heyman says it is a two-year deal, but there's no word as yet with regard to the cost. McCarthy's 2012 season was abruptly terminated when he took a line-drive to the head, but he's expected to be ready to go next season. He does seem to have had his fair share of injury issues, only once in his seven-year career passing the 111 innings he pitched last campaign. But when healthy, he has been very solid, putting up an ERA+ of 121+ over 43 starts for Oakland.

Update: Piecoro just confirmed the two-year deal, for $15.5 million. It gives Arizona a likely rotation on Opening Day of Ian Kennedy, McCarthy, Trevor Cahill, Wade Miley, and one of Tyler Skaggs, Patrick Corbin and Trevor Bauer. At least, that's how the situation appears for now. Whether those three named young pitchers will still be here come Opening Day, is another question...

I'll update this story in a bit with thoughts and reaction.
