Diamondbacks Trade Trevor Bauer + 2 For SS Didi Gregorius

Jonathan Daniel

The blockbuster three-way trade now has some official news: Arizona sends Trevor Bauer, Bryan Shaw and Matt Albers to the Indians, in exchange for Didi Gregorius, Tony Sipp and Lars Anderson.

As officially confirmed on the @Dbacks Twitter account:

Dbacks: OFFICIAL: #Dbacks acquire SS @DidiG18, LHP @SippTony & 1B Lars Anderson from CLE for RHPs Trevor Bauer, Matt Albers and Bryan Shaw

The Diamondbacks have traded phenom-possibility pitcher Trevor Bauer and relievers Bryan Shaw and Matt Albers to the Cleveland Indians. In exchange, they receive shortstop Didi Gregorius from the Cincinnati Reds, and left handed reliever Tony Sipp and first baseman Lars Anderson from Cleveland.

The Indians seem to have made out the most on this deal, also acquiring outfielder Drew Stubbs. They sent Shin-Soo Choo and infielder Jason Donald to the Reds.

Jim already wrote about Gregorus earlier today. He's a highly ranked shortshop prospect in the Reds organization, playing in Double-A and Triple-A this year. He only played for the Reds in September, giving the Diamondbacks six years of control of his contract. This isn't a band-aid, this is a long-term solution for our lack of depth and power at the shortshop position.

Sipp is a young situational lefty pitcher. Quick numbers: 63 games / 55 innings, 4.42 ERA, 1.273 WHIP, 8.3 SO/9. His 2012 numbers are greatly down from his 2011 numbers, but apparently they see him filling a lefty void. Anderson was traded from Boston to Cleveland last year and spent most of the year in Triple-A, hitting a mediocre .250/.353/.396/.750.

Clearly, the Diamondbacks had "soured" on Trevor Bauer, as one reporter put it. He was taken with the #3 overall pick in the 2011 draft, moved quickly through the minor leagues, and made his debut this past summer. He did not fare well in his four starts in Arizona, compiling a 6.06 ERA while striking out 17 and walking 13. He indicated resistance to changing his routine and working with catcher Miguel Montero. Matt Albers and Bryan Shaw weren't important cogs in the bullpen makeup for 2013.
