Demel appeared in only one game for Arizona, being recalled from Reno on August 21, and taking the loss by allowing a 10th-inning run to the Marlins that day at Chase Field, before being optioned back to Reno the next day. He became the fifth Diamondback in team history to get the loss in every appearance for a season, following Billy Buckner (2010), Jeff Bajenaru and Dustin Nippert (2006) and Shane Reynolds (2004). Over three seasons since being traded from the A's in the Conor Jackson deal, Demel appeared 72 times, posting a 4.95 ERA. He spent most of the year in Reno: I'll copy and paste redtopcowboy's assessment from another thread:
Sam was born and raised around Houston, so his family and friends will be thrilled to have him close. Sam loved playing for the D-Backs, and would have been happy to play here for several years, but bullpen guys move around alot. Just for the record, Sam started the 2011 year with the D-Backs and recorded 17 consecutive appearances without an earned run. The remainder of the season was inconsistent, and he started 2012 at AAA Reno.
1. Counting the Reno playoffs, Sam had more appearances (63) than any pitcher in all of minor league baseball.
2. Sam worked out some mechanical issues in April and May of 2012 at Reno. Once that was figured out, since June 1, and counting the playoffs, Sam had 46.1 IP, 14 ER, 58 K, and 13 BB.
3. Since June 1, and counting the playoffs, that is a 2.72 ERA at Reno.
Joining him in Houston will be Jake Elmore, who made his major-league debut on August 11, after Willie Bloomquist went on the DL with a strained back. Elmore had hit .344 for the Aces, with a .908 OPS, but didn't come anywhere near that for the Diamondbacks, hitting .191 with a .497 OPS in 73 PAs. Elmore became the sixth Arizona batter to post a sub .500 OPS in as many trips to the dish, and the first since Jerry Gil in 2004. The right-hander had been a 34th-round pick of the Diamondbacks in the 2008 draft, so I guess we can't be overly upset.
Konrad Schmidt appeared in four games as a back-up catcher, spending a week on the roster in May and then joining the team again as a September call-up - though he had only three at-bats over that time. He had previously spent four games with the team in 2010, and apparently finishes his Arizona career with a 1-for-15 record. It does cross his name off the list as a possible backup for Montero in 2013, but that was likely a fairly slim chance, due to his offensive indifference - he had a .750 OPS in 93 games with Reno, which does not bode well at the major league level. Great mustache, though...
