First music bought: With money that I earned? It was a secondhand copy of The Blue Album by Weezer.

First Concert: A Weird Al concert in the “Bad Hair Day” cycle

Memorable: I’ve been to a lot of all day rock festivals. And those are fun for seeing a good number of bands in a day, and sometimes seeing them around before their set (Mike Ness is shorter than I imagined), but mostly I remember those clearly because of other things that happen (Like the standard “good memories with friends” or "Made out with a random goth behind a port-a-potty).

Listen: I have a cheapy MP3 Player/FM Radio that I listen to a lot walking between classes and to and from home and on the bus. At home I have all of my CDs ripped and whenever I hear something new or think of something I don’t have, I just youtube it.

Radio: In my car. My radio presets that aren’t Sports/Hippie News are the Rock Station, The two classic rock stations, and the classical music station.

Single Song: I get so music ADD sometimes that one song would drive me insane after awhile. (That’s the sound of copping out)

Artist: Hmmm… The Clash

Karaoke: I’ve done field testing on this over the past few years. “Sex And Candy” by Marcy Playground is the one I sound the best at.

Then and Now: Neither. I think that after awhile, the best stuff from any era survives and we nostalgically look back on that while forgetting that there was a lot of crap in between (My mom says this about the 50s/60s era). I also think people tend to embrace the music they listen to at the ages of 16-21 most of all.

Instruments: I’m a somewhat average Bass Player. I also can play anything on the piano so long as it’s in a key of C.

The Blue Album was the second album I ever bought. I’ve had to re-buy it a couple of times, because I kept wearing it out. Awesome album.

Oh yeah

Matt Sharp era Weezer was awesome.

The Blue Album is definitely Top 10 for me (if I actually took the time to think about a Top 10)

The Blue Album probably makes my top 10 as well.

Also, I don’t think it’s coincidence that Weezer began their gradual decline after Matt Sharp left. I’ll take The Rentals over anything Weezer has done since “Pinkerton”, personally.

Very diverse music fan here :)

What was the first music you bought? I don’t remember what I BOUGHT first, per se, but the first cassette I ever received was Billy Joel’s “Glass Houses”

What was the first concert you attended? Waylon & Willie at Red Rocks in Denver with my dad and brother…I was about 8 at the time

What’s the most memorable concert you’ve been to? Van Halen’s last concert in Tucson with Sammy Hagar as the lead singer…2004. I originally had 10th row tickets, being a fan club member got me upgraded to FRONT ROW CENTER! I got to sing with Sammy Hagar on my fave VH song (“Dreams”) and he also signed my lanyard. I also came away with a drum stick from the drummer of their opening act! Also, I have to include Colbie Caillat’s 2010 concert at the AZ State Fair, because I got to meet one of the guitarists after the show (Rafael Moreira, who I saw play with Pink in Tucson back in 2003 and I’ve loved him ever since), and he gave me one of his guitar picks. Very cool guy and talented musician!

How do you listen to music, e.g iPod, Pandora, etc.? My jammin’ Bose system in my car, iPod Touch, Pandora, and Iheartradio.com, tuned in to MIX 96.9

Do you listen to the radio? If so, what stations? Yes…MIX 96.9…my friend A.J. is one of their dj’s

If you could take only a single song to a desert island, which one would it be? Gavin DeGraw’s “Not Over You”…

And what one artist? Colbie Caillat, as she’s my fave female singer

Pick one song to do as karaoke? “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar…every time I go with friends to do karaoke, I always get asked to do it because they say it’s my best-sounding tune ;)

Do you think music was better “then” than now? If so, when was “then”? Better then, yes…but then I grew up on the classics…60’s/70’s/80’s

Play any instruments or have other musical talent? Yes…I was a percussionist for 5 years of my 12 in school…I played everything from the triangle to the drums

First music: Either Kiss Alive 2 album or Diary of a Madman cassette

First concert: Guns n Roses, Faith no More, and Metallica

Most memorable: Steve Miller and the Grateful Dead

How do I listen: Radio or You Tube. I dont own Ipad. mp player, or anything like that

What radio stations: KDKB when in Phx ~ WIYY 98 Rock here in Dc area

One song: Would have to be Sanitarum by Metallica

One artist: The late and great Kurt Cobain

Karaoke: None

Then or Now: 100% then. Most music these days is garbage imo. As far as when, 1960’s to 1990. I love 80’s hair bands but also love classic rock.

Instruments: Nope

Wherein I Prove I'm Old

First Album I bought: The Doors, Morrison Hotel, when it first came out.
First concert: Grateful Dead, Golden Gate Park, 1968
Most Memorable: The Band Farewell Concert, Thanksgiving 1976. Made into the movie “The Last Waltz”
How do I listen: Mostly stereo, but I’m becoming a big fan of Grooveshark.
Radio: NPR (yes, I’m one of those.)
One Song: “Second Skin”, Stockholm Syndrome.
One Artist: Widespread Panic.
Music is timeless, so ‘then or now’ doesn’t really matter.
I can barely play the stereo.

I'm working my way to grumpy old curmudgeon status with all the grace I can muster.

Wow, slow baseball news weekend, huh?

What was the first music you bought? Some hair band called “The Beatles,” an album called “A Hard Day’s Night.”

What was the first concert you attended? Does “Jesus Christ Superstar” count? I was eight.

What’s the most memorable concert you’ve been to? Hilary Hahn’s recital in Scottsdale a few years back. Incredible. She’s the best, period.

How do you listen to music, e.g iPod, Pandora, etc.? Through my computer, iphone and iPad.

Do you listen to the radio? If so, what stations? KFYI News radio.

If you could take only a single song to a desert island, which one would it be? Single song? Hmmm. I’d have to say “More than this” by Roxy Music…

And what one artist? Hilary Hahn.

Pick one song to do as karaoke? “More than this,” but only if Bill Murray is singing it.

Do you think music was better “then” than now? If so, when was “then”? No question today’s popular music doesn’t hold a candle to the popular music of the 80s and some of the non-grunge 90s.

Play any instruments or have other musical talent? I play Renaissance tunes on a guitar, but otherwise possess no musical talent whatsoever. My son, on the other hand, is a professional musician. He didn’t get it from me.

I LOVE the Beatles!

They, along with the Monkees, were the two bands I’ve loved since early childhood. My dad played the song “Yesterday” when he’d tuck me in at night. That song would calm me down enough to sleep…may explain my huge crush/love for Paul McCartney still all these years later ;)

On a side note, alongside Van Halen’s concert, seeing Paul McCartney at Jobing.com Arena a few years ago was a dream come true for me. I’d won tickets off the radio and had pretty decent seating. Paul is absolutely electrifying and amazing in concert and one show you can sing along to every song with. He signs all the greats from the Beatles, Wings, and his solo career.

“What was the first music you bought?”

The first album I ever bought was “Master of Puppets” by Metallica.

“What was the first concert you attended?”

The first concert I ever saw was the Misfits, when I was 13. It was their “reunion” lineup without Glenn Danzig on vocals, but it was still pretty cool.

“What’s the most memorable concert you’ve been to?”

The most fun I ever had a concert was when I saw Weird Al five years ago. I’ve been to LOTS of shows from punk rock to death metal to country, and Weird Al was by far the craziest, most entertaining concert I’ve ever seen.

“How do you listen to music, e.g iPod, Pandora, etc.? Do you listen to the radio? If so, what stations?”

I have over 1500 albums on CD (not including vinyls or music downloads) so I mostly use iTunes and iPods to listen to it all.

“If you could take only a single song to a desert island, which one would it be? And what one artist?”

I would have to take Radiohead, “How to Disappear Completely”.

“Pick one song to do as karaoke?”

David Bowie, “Space Oddity”

“Do you think music was better “then” than now? If so, when was “then”?

I can get down with music from any era, as long as I feel it and it’s good.

“Play any instruments or have other musical talent?”

I played bass in a few bands in high school. Crappy punk and metal bands that mostly played covers. Had a lot of fun, though.

Might as well chip in
  • What was the first music you bought? The first LP was Kate Bush’s The Kick Inside. That’s a good deal more street-cred than the first single (some years previously) which was… The Smurf Song.
  • What was the first concert you attended? Tears for Fears at the Aberdeen Capitol, I’m thinking probably 1984?
  • What’s the most memorable concert you’ve been to? Man… So many choices. Probably The Cramps at Brixton Academy, where I went down when moshing and ended up in the casualty department with a busted lip. Still feel the lump in the corner of my mouth.
  • How do you listen to music, e.g iPod, Pandora, etc.? Mostly through iTunes, but I’ve got a Gb or two on my phone for use at work.
  • Do you listen to the radio? If so, what stations? Some Internet stations, but nothing too specific.
  • If you could take only a single song to a desert island, which one would it be? Solitary by VNV Nation
  • And what one artist? Funker Vogt
  • Pick one song to do as karaoke? Bohemian Rhapsody. Very badly.
  • Do you think music was better “then” than now? If so, when was “then”? Then – the early 1980’s were the golden hour for me.
  • Play any instruments or have other musical talent? Nothing since secondary school, when I pottered on a Casio VL-1 synthesizer.

I'll have a go

What was the first music you bought?
Couldn’t remember if my life depended on it.

What was the first concert you attended?
Weird Al Yankovic. As was the second concert I attended. Third? I forget, but thank goodness it wasn’t Weird Al Yankovic. Might have been The Fray, though that would be pretty depressing.

What’s the most memorable concert you’ve been to?
Bloc Party in Chicago was awesome, mostly because they’re my favorite band. Have been to several memorable shows in my time – The Swell Season, Styx/Boston, and Darius Rucker come to mind.

How do you listen to music, e.g iPod, Pandora, etc.?
iPod. Have now tried Pandora on two separate occasions, and have had it miserably fail to identify what kind of music I like. I’ve given up on it, and think it’s destined to go broke (if it still hasn’t made a profit to date, how is it going to in the future as new competition rises up?).

Do you listen to the radio? If so, what stations?
Used to, don’t anymore except when I’m back home listening to my parents’ XM Radio. Wouldn’t be able to identify a station name…

If you could take only a single song to a desert island, which one would it be?
Angeles by Elliott Smith

And what one artist?
Bloc Party.

Pick one song to do as karaoke?
Ballroom Blitz. Nothing better than making an idiot of yourself on a stage, and I can totally do the screaming parts.

Do you think music was better “then” than now? If so, when was “then”?
Sure, anytime before the 21st Century. Good modern music is pretty hard to find, though it is out there.

Play any instruments or have other musical talent?
I play drums, which really annoys my neighbors in my dorm.

I saw Bonzo on an off night in Tempe

back in ‘77. Led Zep’s show at ASU is generally regarded as their worst performance ever, with Jimmy Page so stoned he had to have his guitar tech strap his guitar for him. At one point, it was so bad, that Robert Plant put on a Les Paul and played Page’s parts.

I never got to see Moon, but I’ve seen Bruford and recently saw an awesome performance by Carl Palmer in Scottsdale.

Carl Palmer is such a rarity

in that while he was obviously amazing with ELP, he’s an even better drummer today. Its especially amazing when you consider that the other giants of the field are going away: Bonzo died in 1980 or so, Phil Collins (another amazing drummer) can’t hold his drumsticks anymore because of arthritis, and Bill Bruford has retired from playing to write books.

My list of

favorite drummers would have the usual suspects (Bonham, Moon, Copeland (a deity amongst men), as well as some newer guys like Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Jerry Gaskill, Chad Sexton (love him so much). Some jazz cats I dig include Elvin Jones and Joe Morello, Tony Williams and Peter Erskine. Manu Katche was legit, too.

It’s the only Bloc Party album I ever heard so far, though. I never got around to getting any of the other ones. Do you recommend any of them?

They're dramatically different

Don’t expect another “Silent Alarm”. There’s a lot more production – not necessarily better, just more – in the later stuff, with even some straight-up techno tunes in the later albums. Honestly, I’d YouTube them first before diving in to buying any of them. That said, I love them.

If you want to check out a few individual songs, I’d go with Song for Clay, Hunting for Witches, Flux (this is techno), Halo (the closest thing to a “Silent Alarm” song since “Silent Alarm”), and, my favorite BP song of all time, Ion Square.

One of the most exhilarating experiences of my life was listening to Helicopter live. It was like the entire concert hall was a moshpit. Or, at least, our three-person group was…

What was the first music you bought? – I believe the first CD I ever bought was Chumbawumba’s “Tubthumpers.” Which is embarrassing, yes.
What was the first concert you attended? – I assume you mean one beyond one of the main endless piano recitals I participated in? Paul McCartney in Anaheim when I was about 6 or 7.
What’s the most memorable concert you’ve been to? – I suppose Lady Gaga. Girl can sing, and puts on one hell of a show.
How do you listen to music, e.g iPod, Pandora, etc.? – Depends on what I’m doing. If I’m out and about, then it’s iPod, but if I’m at home on the desktop then I generally stream through Youtube or Grooveshark.
Do you listen to the radio? If so, what stations? – I do, but not religiously. I rotate between 4 stations while driving: 98.3, 97.5, 101.5, and 104.7. Which one I’m listening to depends on which one is not on commercial break.
If you could take only a single song to a desert island, which one would it be? – I wouldn’t. There’s no song I’d want to listen to forever, I’d rather be alone and make my own music.
And what one artist? – I guess I’d go with King’s X. They have quite a few CDs, and they evolved their sound over time to make things interesting.
Pick one song to do as karaoke? – Not really a karaoke participant, considering my lack of singing ability. I think karaoke requires upbeat songs, so I’d probably pick something Foo Fighters like “Monkey Wrench.”
Do you think music was better “then” than now? If so, when was “then”?
Play any instruments or have other musical talent? – I can play piano, clarinet, drums, and a little bit of guitar. But no, I don’t have any talent.

Tomorrow is another day.

Whoops.jpg

missed the “better now or then” question.

I think it’s a bit ridiculous to try to say music was better in some period or another because it largely will biased toward the person’s frame of youth. There are many great musicians out there right now (and I’d argue there are probably more in number than the probably golden age in the 60’s or whatever lame decade you choose), but you have to have an ear to actually find it. I think if you want to stay stuck in your frame of music, that’s fine, but I like discovering music that’s current just as much as I like finding super-backlist music from the 80’s or 50’s. Though for the sake of argument I’ll say it’s better to listen to music now because it is so much easier to access new things (like everything else IT and search has brought us).

Yeah it's weird how clear some stations come in and some don't

Depending where you’re at. Another thing I find odd is that on my car’s stereo system, each station displays their ID numbers, such as 96.9, 97.5, etc…and the title and artists of each song displays while a tune is playing…but 97.5’s station is the only one whose doesn’t display the song title or artist at all…so I have to Shazam that station whenever I want to know an artist or title.

But yeah, I won and Elvis Duran shirt from their show :)

From the embarrassing but true files…

Being as old as I am (with age appropriate memory), I could not restrict my choices to a single favorite in most categories:

First music: It was soooo long ago, not sure if it was Elton John’s single, "Philadelphia Freedom", or "Make Life a Little Easier" by Rodney Allen Rippy – both on vinyl 45 rmp records

First concert: Cheap Trick’s "Live at Budokan" tour with Blue Oyster Cult, (I went for Cheap Trick, didn’t care much for BOC) in Tucson around 1978-79

Most memorable concert: Tony Bennett, Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, and Johnny Mathis

How do you listen: Sometimes on the radio in the car, and even more infrequently on and iPad/iPod thing

Radio: Rarely, but if so, KTAR (Arizona Sports)

Desert island single: Al Green’s "Let’s Stay Together (1972), Steely Dan’s "Aja" (1977) or Charlie Hunter’s "More than This" with Nora Jones (2001)

One artist: Stan Getz (with João Gilberto, of course)

Karaoke: "Just a Gigolo", the Louis Prima version

Better “then” or now: I am sounding a lot like my mom talking about MY taste in music when I was a kid…, but I am going to have to go for "then".. and by "then", I mean from back before I was born till about my mid-30’s – my favorites (in alpha order, so NO, ABBA is not my #1 favorite): ABBA, Amy Winehouse, The Beatles, Billy Holiday, The Clash, Claude Bolling, The Cure, David Bowie, FEAR, Getz & Gilberto, Gipsy Kings, Johnny Cash, Louis Prima & Keely Smith, Madness, No Doubt, Oasis, Patsy Cline, Pavarotti, Sinatra, Social Distortion, Talking Heads, Tom Jones, Tony Bennett, Violent Femmes, Yo Yo Ma

Instrument: No musical talent whatsoever, but was first chair Cello in elementary school and can manage a kazoo just fine

True Story

First Music Bought: Black Sabbath – Greatest Hits. I think I was about 14-15 years old.

First Concert: Technically I saw Alison Krauss at a Bluegrass festival when she was in her late teens but I’ll go with the Allman Brothers at the Beacon Theatre. I think I was 15 years old.

Memorable: I go to a yearly Bluegrass festival and this year (‘02) the surviving members of Old & in the Way reunited as Old & in the Grey to closeout the Saturday night show, the place was packed in a giant hay-field, BYOB’s and rocking out for 2ish hours. I was only 18 at the time but it was by far my best live show to date.

Listen: I have a music collection (50+ GB’s), also use Live Archive (awesome site), Spotify and Pandora.

Radio: In my car. Really all genres of music, as long as it’s loud.

Single Song: While Guitar Gently Weeps.

Artist: Grateful Dead, I’d be happier than sh*t.

Karaoke: Van Morrison’s Caravan but performed the way he did in The Last Waltz (he had on a purple sparkly one-z thing with chest hair and sexiness oozing out).

Then and Now: Then, circa 1967-1974. Pretty much all the legends we’re alive and rocking. Now a days everything is a cover of all those songs back then.

Instruments: I played the ukulele in 4th grade, then dabbled with the guitar but that’s it.

What was the first music you bought?
I’m fairly certain it was Reload. Might have been one of the earlier albums.

What was the first concert you attended?
What’s the most memorable concert you’ve been to?

Same answer for both, since I’ve only been to one. Summer Sanitarium in 2000. Metallica, Korn, Kid Rock, Powerman 5000 and System of a Down.

How do you listen to music, e.g iPod, Pandora, etc.?
Usually my iPod, but I’ve been using Pandora a lot. Its introduced me to a lot of stuff I’d have never otherwise discovered.

Do you listen to the radio? If so, what stations?
For music? Never, at least not since I cancelled XM. Here in Yuma we only have 2 top 40 stations and a country station. No thanks.

If you could take only a single song to a desert island, which one would it be?
Nightwish – Dark Chest of Wonders

And what one artist?
Metallica

Pick one song to do as karaoke?
No thank you.

Do you think music was better “then” than now? If so, when was “then”?
Then, and that means pretty much any time before I graduated high school. Before, I could tolerate the radio if I was stuck in a car or something, but I almost got into a fight with a co-worker over the music in the truck a few years ago.

Play any instruments or have other musical talent?
Nope. I tried trombone in grade school and failed miserably.

by The so-called Beautiful on Jan 30, 2012 4:27 PM EST reply actions

What was the first music you bought? Possibly the soundtrack for Ghostbusters 2? I could be wrong. (Don’t judge.)
What was the first concert you attended? First one was, I think, Mister Mister. I was five or six, it was after a Denver Zephyrs game. If I recall, I was standing on a chair, slipped and hit my head, and we left early. Next one I remember after that was Paul Revere and the Raiders? At a county fair.
What’s the most memorable concert you’ve been to? The second time I got to see VNV Nation. I’d been wanting to see them for years, and just missing them each time- the worst was the year we moved to Utah. They played in Salt Lake City two days before we left Arizona, and then played in Phoenix the day after we left. We finally got to see them a couple years ago, and then again a handful of months later in New Mexico. It was just chance we were in New Mexico in time to see them, the venue was tiny and fantastic, and it was a really great show. At one point they lost power to the stage, so while they waited for it to be fixed, Ronan Harris led the crowd in singing Journey songs. It was funny.
How do you listen to music, e.g iPod, Pandora, etc.? Either my iPod or Pandora. I realized a few days ago that I have Pandora stations I have been fine-tuning for six years now. But they’re good stations!
Do you listen to the radio? If so, what stations? Eh… With 103.9 dead, I now pretty much resort to my iPod, NPR, or sports.
If you could take only a single song to a desert island, which one would it be? “Always Look On The Bright Side of Life” by Monty Python. It’d probably be necessary.
And what one artist? Either VNV Nation or Motion City Soundtrack.
Pick one song to do as karaoke? I’ve always wanted a friend to do You Don’t Know Me by Ben Folds and Regina Spektor as a duet.
Do you think music was better “then” than now? If so, when was “then”? Eh. Some of it’s good, but some of it’s terrible- much like every other era. I do have a particular love of 90s music, but there’s so many good bands out there now, and it’s easier to find them, thanks to the wonders of the internet.
Play any instruments or have other musical talent? I can sing, but otherwise my musical talents extend to playing the kazoo and the block. I’d like to learn to play the violin or fiddle, if I had the chance.

What was the First Music you bought?

That would be the cassette of the Primus album Pork Soda which I still own to this day and love

First concert you attended

It was a Festival concert of a local Radio station, 106.5 the end’s Weenie Roast. Jewel was there before she was famous, also Seven Mary Three, Buffalo Tom was the headliner (lol)

The Most Memorable concert you’ve been to Easy. It’s also the most recent one I’ve been to, The All Stars Tour. I went to see Iwrestledabearonce and they were great(they all signed my shirt, I’m such a groupie), but Chelsea Grin and The Ghost Inside were extremely memorable as well.

How do you listen to music

Ipod or that old standby, the Compact Disc

Do you listen to the radio?

Yes

One single song on a desert island

This is really tough………..there are so many in contention here, it’s down to either Tastes Like Kevin Bacon by Iwrestledabearonce, 13 Year Old Ruby by Arsonists Get All The Girls, or either The Weekly Wars or Civeta Dei by Number 12 Looks Like You. (sigh) I’m gonna have to go with Civeta Dei I guess. It really doesn’t matter because they are all great to me so whatever. Any of those 4.

One Artist on desert island

EASY. THE NUMBER 12 LOOKS LIKE YOU

Karaoke song

This: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zh2SGxb17jk LMAO nah but seriously, Come Sail Away by Styx

Music better now or then?

I don’t discriminate based on year of release.

Play any instruments?

As some of you may know I’m a pretty good drummer. Not great. But whatever, I like where I am in that regard.

Thanks.

In a dispassionate view, the ardor for reform, improvement for virtue, knowledge, and even beauty, is only a vain sticking-up for appearances, as if one were anxious about the cut of one's clothes, in a community of blind men.
