Check out the link for a mock draft with in-depth scouting reports on each player "drafted." I have the Diamondbacks selecting college catcher Josh Elander. Feedback is much appreciated.

College catcher

I like it. Honestly, with the spring season not underway yet, it’s hard to make many judgments here, but you’ve got the right idea of Arizona’s needs on the farm. Up-the-middle players in general, maybe super-super-high-ceiling relief pitching. Honestly, though, I wouldn’t be shocked to see a high school starting arm. Wouldn’t mind it, either.

I read a lot

But I don’t know enough about the upcoming draft class. Sorry to disappoint, I just don’t look that far ahead. So much changes so quickly.

Appreciated

When I look at mock drafts this early on, I’m just mostly looking to see what people consider to be the holes in each team’s farm system. You nailed ours.

I'm hoping one of the middle infield bats falls to us

it looks like Marrero, Correa, Diekroeger, and Cecchini will all have a chance to stick at SS

if Montero is signed to a long-term contract, and Bianco improves, we may not need C as much in the system as a middle infielder

I think Diekroeger has an excellent chance of falling to us. Of course, if his junior season is as mediocre as last season ended up for him, he might fall down to the supplemental round.

What happened to best available?

Most of the time, you guys preach against drafting for need in the first few rounds. The Dbacks are hard up for talent up the middle, to be sure, but even a fast moving high school player will take several years. And a catcher would take even more time, I’d imagine, with the emphasis on game calling.

Or do you see Elander as the best player this far down in the draft?

Ehhhh,

The “don’t draft for need” idiom, at least how I see it, applies to major-league-level needs. Farm system needs are worth addressing if there’s a player you like at a slot – for instance, it’s not like Montero is a scrub at the MLB level who needs replacing, but catching is thin in the system. BPA certainly holds, but I also tend to think that high-round catcher picks are typically quality finds. Elander’s good and worthy of consideration at this point, and after the top few picks, there are plenty of players worthy of consideration at any slot. It’s not a significant overdraft, and it addresses a farm system need.

I can live with that

basically, Elander is good enough to go there, so give a nod to the farm system need. That’s fine if he really isn’t a reach for the first round…I leave in it the hands of others to give me that info.

And for some reason I saw “college catcher” and thought high-school. So it makes more sense in my mind if the need is filled with someone closer to the majors.
