Bartolo Colon for 5th Starter?
Given what we probably have left to spend, he could come cheap and would be a good guy to compete with the younger starters in Spring Training

Sure why not

i'd be okay
with a small deal for Colon. could give our prospects some extra time in the minors to work out any small problems remaining.
Gut instinct
no thanks. I think at least one of the prospects will be ready by the end of spring training, and will be able to hold down that number five spot better than he could

Only as a non-roster spring training invite
If he makes the team, he gets paid. Otherwise nada. Which I’m sure he wouldn’t go for.

He got 900K last year
But that was coming off several injury filled years. He manaded 164 IP last year, so that increases his value if any team thinks he can go close to that many again in 2012.
For a team trying to win in 2012, it won’t kill them to have the depth. But it definitely will take away 2012 starts at the major league level for Bauer and Skaggs. (Unless there are a lot of injuries to the rotation)
The worst major leaguer is better at baseball than I'll ever be at anything I ever do in my life.
Was Colon overrated or underrated ?
There was a lot of howling, (rightfully so), from the Sabermetric community when he won the CY Young in 2005 over Johan Santana. Yeah, he had the pretty win totals, but there was no doubt Santana was the best pitcher in the AL that year. And in 2004, Colon won 18 games with an ERA over 5.
There was also “the trade” in 2002, where Montreal gave up Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore and Brandon Phillips to get Colon for half a season. Clearly he wasn’t worth THAT
So due to those two season, the trade, and then subsequent injury filled years, I think a lot of people may think of him as a really overrated pitcher.
But from 1998-2005 he had 7 seasons of 3.8 WAR or higher. Only 1 pitcher in the game had more such seasons. (Pedro with 8) and two other guys, named Curt and Randy are the only other pitchers with 7 during that span.
http://bbref.com/pi/shareit/a2zWy
And over the last 20 years, only 8 pitchers have had more than his 7 seasons of 3.8 WAR or higher.
http://bbref.com/pi/shareit/SyWrW
No don’t freak out and say I’m using selective begin and end points to make erroneous comps. I’m not doing that. Obviously those other pitchers around him on the list had higher peaks of greatness which Colon never achieved. His best season was 4.7 WAR.
But he was in fact one of the best 10-20 pitchers in the game over a 7-8 year stretch, and sometimes I think that gets a little obscured in the narrative of Bartolo Colon’s career, especially in this what have you done for me lately world.
The worst major leaguer is better at baseball than I'll ever be at anything I ever do in my life.
the trade did his reputation in
that was back when people had absolutely no clue how to value players
some teams of course, were more clueless than others

For what we have to offer, it'd be a phenomenal move
Call me nuts, but I’d put the odds in favor of Colon being better from April-June than Skaggs and possibly Bauer. Guys who post 3.8 FIPs in the AL East usually aren’t available to us for a million bucks or so, so even with the risks, the potential steal is great.

this is what I was thinking
Colon was much better in the first half of last year than the second half, at which point one of our young guys should emerge as ready and take his place. If it’s late enough in the season when Colon starts to fade we can delay our service clocks on Bauer/Skaggs.
Isn't everyone a little surprised
that the team seems willing to block all our young pitchers like this? What could be the reason for that? Concern one of the starters is likely to go down? Not feeling that Bauer or Skaggs is ready? No confidence in Miley? Desire to keep Skaggs from being a Super 2?
I was always a Colon fan having grown up an Indians fan and I don’t have any real dislike to having him in the rotation. But it sure seems like one of the youngsters is bound to break out.

Pitching depth
You basically never need just five starters in a season – the last NL team to do so was the 1966 Dodgers! 2009-2011, Arizona used 10, 12 and 11 different starters. No-one’s getting “blocked” here.

by Dan Strittmatter on Jan 14, 2012 2:25 PM EST up reply actions
eh
to you and Jim, i think we have the minor league depth that we don’t need to worry about pitcher injuries that much
i think there is some worry that Skaggs’s AA was a small sample size mirage, and some worry that Bauer can’t harness his control/command early in the season
that’s why i’d be okay with a Colon signing, because the two guys with the upside over Colon have some small question marks (and of course if you’re worried about Super 2 stuff) and the other depth pieces (Corbin, Miley, Brewer) would probably be slightly worse than Colon
by blue bulldog on Jan 14, 2012 4:00 PM EST up reply actions
Agreed
Hence my comment that I’d take Colon from April-June over those guys, great as they are. It’s risky to go into the year relying on one of them – not a huge risk, but a risk.
Granted, who knows if we’ll actually get him at this point.

and
signing a veteran starter for a couple million bucks at most to solidify a rotation is hardly “blocking” a prospect.

Well, I guess it’s not so bad if we sign him, but I’d rather see Skaggs, Bauer, Miley or one of the bajillion other prospects get the 5th spot. It would be wrong to just give Colon the job, IMO.

I'd be more interested to see
the DBacks make a run at Roy Oswalt. He wants a 1 yr deal, he’s willing to take a discount to what he’s worth, and he was perfectly fine the last 2 months of the year last year after he came back.
The only red flag I see is given all that, why didn’t the Yankees snap him up? I know the Yanks are trying to cut payroll but they badly needed started pitching and 1 yr, $8M for Oswalt? They couldn’t swing that deal? Makes me wonder if something more is up with Oswalt.
As for Colon, meh, I say run Bauer out there and see what he’s got. (and while I’d love to see Skaggs get a shot, count me as someone who thinks Skaggs doesn’t sniff the majors in 2012 and maybe even 2013 if the front office can avoid it. UNless he absolutely destroys the minors and forces the DBacks’ hand, I think they bury him for another year or two to have a cost controlled ace down the road.)
well fwiw
i’d rather have Kuroda for $10MM than Oswalt for $8MM
which is what the Yankees did
by blue bulldog on Jan 14, 2012 4:01 PM EST up reply actions
as for Skaggs
i don’t know, but i think he’ll end up forcing the Dbacks’ hand
i think it’s going to be less of an issue of the front office actively holding him back, and more that if our starting five keeps performing, there’d be no room to add him to the major league roster
i think we could use a cost controlled top-of-the-rotation guy at any time. honestly, worst case scenario is we trade IPK for hitting prospects a year from now.
