SnakeBytes 9/23: Showdown Edition
Okay. Giants are here. We know what needs to happen. I don't think it needs any elaboration.
Series Preview:
- [FS Arizona] Today on FOX Sports Arizona: D-backs vs. Giants, 6 p.m.
- [DBacks.com] D-backs ready to seize torch from Giants
-
[MLB.com] Giants likely to shift rotation for D-backs series
Let's do this.
DBacks News:-
[AZ Central] Arizona Diamondbacks' Jerry Dipoto is the man with a plan - Every time Daniel Hudson pitches, we should remember to say thanks to DiPoto.
-
[DBacks.com] D-backs' Wives to host "Favorite Things" silent auction benefitting Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation For Chrysalis On Sept. 24 - You can make your bids at the game on Saturday. An interesting variety from the different players...
-
[DBacks Venom] Why the Diamondbacks Moved Joe Saunders Up to Start on Friday - Planning for the playoffs, basically. Which is still weird to me.
-
[The Washington Post] Sheinin’s 2011 MLB awards picks: NL Manager of the Year - An obvious choice. But, seriously, Bochy at third?
-
[AZ Central] Arizona Diamondbacks extra innings with pitcher Jarrod Parker - Parker isn't as talkative as some other players...
Around Baseball:
-
[MiLB] Top promotions vie for recognition - I love minor league promotions, and there are some great ones listed here...
-
[MLB.com] MLB to bring all-star series to Taiwan - I like the idea of having a team of players go over in the off-season much better than sending teams to play on the other side of the planet during the regular season.
-
[Wall St Journal] Former Detroit Tigers Great Arrested at Border - Whoooops.
-
[CBS Sports] Ramirez willing to serve ban to play baseball - All he's asking is that you sign him and then know he can't do anything for two-thirds of a season.
-
[Daily Mail] Florida Marlins pitcher Leo Nunez done for the season after it's revealed he's playing under a phony name - Again: Whoooops.
-
[East Valley Tribune] Mesa, Cubs close to finalizing details on baseball complex - Mesa is obviously much more optimistic about this complex than I am. But the Cubs are supposed to have a restaurant open by the first day of Spring Training games in the new park.
-
[HardballTalk] Marlins to interview Nationals third base coach Bo Porter - Bo Porter was third base coach and bench coach for the DBacks before he was fired in the last off-season.
Finish it, DBacks.

Reno promotions
How did I miss this:
Reno Aces — Johnny Cash Weekend
The team sported black theme jerseys, gave away Johnny Cash t-shirts and hosted musically inclined members of his family at the ballpark.
I got nothin'.
Once I move,
it will only a 5 hour drive to Reno. Promotions like this will make it so worth it!!

Going up tonight!
The D’Backs are undefeated in games I attend this year, so that may be a good sign.

Is it game-time yet?
I am eager for this to begin.

Early GDT, I think
If I feel like this, imagine how the players must feel? I just hope they’re no over-amped. Might be part of why Saunders goes tonight, rather than Collmenter. Joe has been here before.

has to be...
prob why Cain is pitching tonight too… not a good game to throw a rookie into…
Yeah
I don’t think it would be a good idea to pitch Collmenter tonight. Way to much pressure. If I can’t sit still, I would think that the players are also pretty amped

I don't buy that at all
Saunders may be the more experienced of the two, but he’s also the inferior pitcher as well IMO. Not only that, but I don’t think this is much of a pressure situation either. Just one win, or one Giants loss, means we’re in the post season. Even still, there’d be a one game playoff after that. Cruise control. I’d love to crush the Giants tonight (actually, tomorrow would be more preferable since I’m recapping that! :D) to knock them out of the post season officially, but even if we lose this game, what could possibly go wrong?

ah
For some reason I thought today was the 24th.
Well, then, Diamondbacks, proceed to lose the next two games! (actually, no, don’t do that)

Agreed
Of the two, Collmenter has been the better pitcher this year. I don’t think it’ll matter, though. I think this love of the so-called “veteran” will get Saunders starts ahead of Collmenter in the post season, no matter what. Saunders career numbers are not impressive, and this year’s numbers aren’t significantly better. It’s not like he has tons of post season experience, either. I’ll be hoping he does well, but I just don’t think he’s that good.

Not Much Pressure Today on AZ
If anything, the only game that could really be a pressure game is Sunday’s, if the Giants win the first two.
I agree with this

I'd *like* us to win tonight
But Saunders vs. Cain is not so good a match-up as Kennedy vs. N00b [though Surkamp has been decent, to the benefit of my fantasy team!]. If I had to bet, I can see us losing tonight and clinching tomorrow. But I’d rather we win tonight.

Minor factoid
Team needs to draw 181,000 over the remaining six games to pass last year’s total attendance. Saturday’s game is sold out, so that should be 48,500, leaving 132,500 over the remaining five games. I can see 30-35,000 tonight and Sunday, easy, which would means 67,500 over the Dodgers series, 22,500 per game.
"We have to resist it. Do whatever you have to. Cross your fingers. Say a prayer. Think of a basket of kittens. But do not give in to the fear..."
While the attendance figures are probably a bit disappointing
the fact is, Arizona has really been hit hard by this double-dip recession, and attendance is down virtually everywhere. For the D’Backs to maintain attendance in such a tough time is actually an accomlishment.

Great, but the guys "making bank" may not be baseball fans
which are typically a more blue-collar crowd.

Phoenix has one of the lowest per-capita income rates of any MLB city.
Well, the State of Arizona, definitely.

"Right to starve" state
The state of Arizona rivals a lot of deep South states in its poverty levels and low standard of living.
by azshadowwalker on Sep 23, 2011 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Actually
Attendance is up in more places than it’s down, 17-13. Overall, attendance is fractionally higher this season.
However, you’re right about the recession stuff.

Well, the good news is there are really 9 chances to clinch
rather than just one. Even should the Giants sweep, all the D’Backs would need to is win one against the Dodgers at home, or the Giants lose just one against the pebbles.

The real nail biting comes in the post season
so just enjoy these games. If they can’t accomplish this, then they didn’t deserve to be there in the first place.

Yeah, well something to remember...
I don’t get to excited about things I have no control over, nor do I get too upset over things I have no control over, and major league baseball is one of those things.

I"ll be there on Sunday. Sitting in the nosebleed seats so as to have money for playoff tix! (And, well, hockey tickets.) Yay!
Yet another game against Cain. Sigh.
Liked the piece about Minor League promotions. Nice to see an interview with Jarrod Parker. Who definitely does not seem very chatty. LOL. Hope to see him pitch at least one inning over the next week.
Yeah! Work is done
