The Arizona Diamondbacks announced today they have acquired left-handed pitcher Mike Zagurski from the Philadelphia Phillies and designated right-handed pitcher Esmerling Vasquez for assignment, according to Kevin Towers.
Zagurski, 28, posted a 5.40 ERA (2 ER in 3.1 IP) and .286 opponents average (4-for-14) with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts in 4 games with the Phillies this season. He also went 4-0 with 11 saves, a 2.65 ERA (16 ER in 54.1 IP) and .226 opponents average (43-for-190) with 27 walks and 63 strikeouts in 46 games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Over parts of three Major League seasons with the Phillies, he is 1-0 with a 6.82 ERA (24 ER in 31.2 IP) and .294 opponents average (37-for-126) with 19 walks and 36 strikeouts in 37 games. Zagurski was originally selected by the Phillies in the 12th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.
Once Zagurski reports, the D-backs active roster will be at 33 players, while the 40-man roster is at its full complement.

Huh?
They need a loogy to face Ethier for one series? Or is this a next year move?

Is Ethier that guy that went to ASU?

possible next year move
Joe Pa would be the only lefty to be a lock to make next year’s roster

I don't really understand this move
I know it’s not a lot of games, but those numbers don’t impress me. Maybe they see something there that isn’t evident in the numbers.
How did this come about? What was given up to acquire him?
For a PTBNL
That will undoubtedly be an org player, this is fine by me. The team has been searching for a second ‘pen lefty for quite a while, and this is a better alternative than Alberto Castillo (or Jordan Norberto…). Over a strikeout per inning in the bigs is pretty nice, despite the BB’s.

He hits arbitration for the first time next year
But he’ll make next to nothing…

I thought trades ended on 8/31.
Guess not. Don’t remember seeing a September trade. Any ideas why? Only reason I can think of is he won’t be eligible for playoff roster. Or will he?
Not sure if he can replace one of the 60-Day DL guys
I’m pretty sure he can. Since we have Marquis and Gutierrez on the 60-Day DL who are eligible, we can put two guys who technically aren’t eligible and sneak them onto the postseason roster.

those roster spots were already taken
by Aaron Hill and someone else

Those spots are still available
Everyone on the 25-Man roster on August 31, plus everyone on the DL (Drew, Gutierrez, Marquis), is eligible for the playoff roster. And then the DL-players can be replaced by anyone on the 40-Man roster who was in the org by August 31. So there are a lot of choices for the actual 25-Man playoff roster (but not Zagurski).
Ah, forgot Drew too.

Waiver wire trades
are through the end of the season. The reason there is the August 31st ‘deadline’, is because that is usually when players need to be on the roster, for post season reasons.
Of course, as Dan stated, you can get around that depending who is on the DL.
I got nothin'.
Can't be on the playoff roster
The player has to be in the organization on August 31 to be eligible for the playoffs. So the 60-Day DL loophole can’t be used in this case.
Weird...
But okay.

Love it
Depending on the PTBNL…low risk move for a guy who has nice minor league numbers and can be sitting in AAA next year should we need an extra lefty. I love, love, love grabbing guys from other teams who have bombed in a short call-up to the majors but have a decent track record in the minors. Ian Kennedy comes to mind.
They suggested
on SBNation that maybe the PTBNL was Zagurski himself. Nothing to really suggest this, but just some speculation I heard

but yes
i agree that guys who have bombed in a short call-up but were awesome in the minors should be obtained
this was why i was ecstatic when i heard we had traded for Dan Hudson

I think that this
must be a next year kind of move. Those numbers don’t inspire confidence for postseason play…

Hmm
Zagurski’s put up decent minor league numbers but he’s also got an injury history—he missed all of 2008 and 2009.
AAA move
meh.
