SnakeBytes 9/16: Even Dozen Edition
Twelve games left. That's all we have before the end of the regular season.
Series Previews:
-
[DBacks.com] D-backs looking to close in on West title - Poor Padres. Two straight weeks of just playing the DBacks and the Giants. But they just need to lose a few more games to us this weekend, and then they're done for the season.
-
[CBS Sports] Diamondbacks-Padres Preview - The Padres are hitting .218 as a team since August 24. Hard to believe they're in last place, isn't it?
-
[Sign on San Diego] Arizona visits Petco with chance to clinch West - Well, we'd need some help. And I'd rather clinch it at home.
-
[LA Times] Diamondbacks open set in San Diego - The Padres didn't do anything to help us when they were swept by the Giants. We'll just have to ask that they make up for it by getting swept again.
-
[AZ Republic] Arizona Diamondbacks' Miguel Montero making huge strides - Miggy has really stepped up his game this year, and the team is definitely better off for it.
-
[DBacks Venom] How Long Should Trevor Bauer and Tyler Skaggs Stay in the Minors? - We've been hearing a lot about when we should call up our prospects from the minors. Amit looks at some other comparable pitchers and considers how many starts they made before they appeared in a major league uniform.
-
[KTAR-AZ Sports] Diamondbacks want to become the new Atlanta Braves - We've got a lot of potential in our pitching future. If we can put together a team like Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz, this team could be very good for quite a while.
-
[AZ Central] Arizona Diamondbacks extra innings with Aaron Hill - What does Aaron Hill want from his time with the Diamondbacks? The World Series. Okay, get to it.
-
[Phoenix Biz Journal] Mountainside Fitness to open new gym in Chase Field - Not the first place I'd think to put a gym, really.
-
[Pro Sports Blogs] Diamondbacks Are The Best Team With An Empty Stadium - See, I just wish more people would go to games so we could stop hearing about the attendance.
-
[AZ Central] For Arizona Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick, 2011 season already a smashing success - I'll admit, I have to side with Ken here. This season has already been far better than I had hoped.
-
[SD Union Trib] Padres execs have mixed feelings about their old team - Josh Byrnes and A.J. Hinch are watching the DBacks make a run for the playoffs, while their team wallows in last place.
Around Baseball:
-
[SF Gate] Pablo Sandoval hits for the cycle in SF Giants' win - According to third-base coach Tim Flannery told it, ""Joe [West] asked Pablo if he needed any oxygen. Pablo said no, and Joe said, 'We needed oxygen just watching you run.' "
-
[Baseball America] USA Baseball, Australia Release World Cup Rosters - A.J. Pollock from the DBacks farm system will be out there to represent the US.
-
[ESPN Dallas] Texas Rangers OF Josh Hamilton's slam triggers free flooring payout - I always love stories like this.
-
[The A.V. Club] Prelude to a save: A closer’s guide to choosing the right entrance song - It's an important choice to make. You can't pick just any song.
-
[CBS News] Young fan wins coveted Cubs announcer job - Thousands of applicants on YouTube, and the Cubs picked a long time fan to be their new PA announcer.
-
ABB [WSJ] The Man Not Named in 'Moneyball' - One of the main inspirations for the film won't see his name on screen, at his own request- Paul DePodesta just didn't feel comfortable at the thought.

Amit's post
is pretty awesome
Bauer should be in the majors, no doubt in my mind. In terms of college performance, those guys at the top of the list, Strasburg, Lincecum, Verlander, Price, Weaver, are the best comps for Bauer. and as the years have gone by, we’ve seen a philosophy shift that pitchers shouldn’t be in the minors to waste their arms away. it makes a whole lot of sense to me that Bauer should be used in the majors straight out of spring training.
Skaggs is more interesting. i keep forgetting just how insanely young he is. but i still think he’s ready for the majors. in terms of makeup, polish, results, he just seems ready. yeah, it would put him in the company of the likes of Kershaw, Sabathia, Hernandez, and Cain. and to be honest i’m extremely hesitant to say he’s going to be that good.
but damn….his numbers are just video-game worthy at the minor league level right now.
Thanks
I feel similarly about Skaggs. He has great numbers, but I don’t think his stuff is in the Kershaw/Hamels class. That’s why I’d rather not rush him to the Majors in 2012. Let him pitch in AAA, and there’s also a decent chance his velocity will tick up as he enters his 20s.
12 games left?
Really? Is this wonderful amazing regular season going to be over so soon? It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating our rise to first. Oh well. Now let’s get on with it, and make some noise in the post season!

Clinching
I’d rather clinch as early as possible. I don’t care where it happens. The sooner it’s over with, the better I will feel. The Giants are doing nothing but winning lately. Admittedly, that’s due to the inferior competition. I just don’t know why anyone would rather mess around with this thing instead of just getting it over and done with.
