SnakeBytes 8/30: Five Games Edition
How 'bout that, huh?
Recaps:
-
[DBacks.com] D-backs show some fight in seventh straight win - You want to know how to get the Rockies? They hit a batter, you hit a run-scoring double! They put one of yours on first base, you put one of theirs in the clubhouse with a five run deficit! That's the Diamondbacks way!
-
[FS Arizona] Diamondbacks have Upton's aching back - Justin Upton was hit by a pitch for the 15th time this year. The team wasn't happy with it. Daniel Hudson said "We're taking it a little personally." I'm not gonna lie, that gives me chills a little bit. Seeing them go out and step up to defend their teammate? That gives me hope for this team, even more than a winning record.
-
[AZ Central] Daniel Hudson lifts Arizona Diamondbacks over Colorado Rockies - The pitching has been fantastic this last stretch. Full credit to all our starters and the bullpen for such an incredible run of games.
-
[The Denver Post] Hudson throws 7 shutout innings for Arizona - The Rockies had their chances against Hudson early on. But he worked out of it, and once he was focused, they didn't have a chance, as he sent down the last eleven batters he faced.
-
[DBacks.com] Big deal of 2009 a winner for all involved - At the time of the trade, I thought this would be what Josh Byrnes's tenure with the DBacks was judged by. It wasn't enough to keep him his job, but we probably owe him a thank you for it.
-
[FS Arizona] D-backs as confident as their manager - The season isn't over yet. But Gibby is pretty confident in this team, and they're listening to him.
-
[AZ Central] Arizona Diamondbacks center fielder Chris Young's walks offset woes - Yeah, he isn't hitting as well as we'd like. But he's leading the team in walks, so that helps.
-
[SB Nation Arizona] Ryan Roberts: The Poster Child For The 2011 Arizona Diamondbacks - A guy who barely made the team out of Spring Training, has jumped up to take advantage of an opening in the roster, and has been playing out of his mind to surprise all of us this season. Uh, yeah, that pretty much represents the season well. The Dread Pirate came into the season with 10 home runs and 7 stolen bases in his career, and now he's got an outside shot at joining J-Up (and probably CY) in the 20-20 club this year.
-
[The D-blog] D-backs Prospects Making Their Mark in Mobile - Look, I may not normally be too big a fan of prospects. But running out this rotation at Mobile is pretty awesome.
-
[Reno Gazette-Journal] Dan Hinxman: D'backs brass made Aces' run a possibility - The Aces have seen a turn-around like the DBacks did this year, going from fourth place last year to holding first place for over four months straight now, and winning their first PCL title. There's a lot to enjoy in the DBacks system this year.
-
[Baseball Nation] Should We Have Seen The Diamondbacks Coming? - Hey, I didn't expect it. I don't hold it against anyone who doubted this team. (But, come on, automatically in last place? I thought we'd at least fight for third.)
Around Baseball:
-
[Beyond the Box Score] Dustin Pedroia vs. Little League - Best infographic I've seen in weeks.
-
[ESPN] Information age is changing the way the game is played - Age of the geek, baby, as Hardison often reminds us. After the article posted in the comments a few days back about football teams using iPads for playbooks, here is a look into how technology is working its way into baseball.
-
[Baltimore Sun] Has Mark Reynolds exceeded your expectations in 2011? - From the "Diamondbacks Past" file- Mark has gotten some bad press for his defense lately, but he's cut down on the Ks and his average is up, so are the Orioles happy with what they've seen from him?
-
[Big League Stew] Ballpark hero: Nationals Park beer vendor saves choking child - This guy? Hero.
-
[Baseball Nation] Cubs Vs. Giants: A Game Defying All Odds - I'm just gonna leave this here.

Age of the geek, baby!
Love Hardison. And Elliot.
Wonder how this will change Gibby’s ideas about iPads in the locker room.
It's the stuff that dreams are made of
It's the slow and steady fire
I particularly
like the comment one the “Should we have seen the Dbacks coming” article

wow
for some reason i thought Jarrod Parker had prototypical size for a pitcher…but he actually looks pretty short….
also….Brewer went to UCLA too right? wonder if the socks are a UCLA thing haha
This article
Really made me feel for Tim Lincecum. I mean….I’m sure I speak for tons of baseball fans everywhere, that Lincecum is just an awesome pitcher to watch, and that most people would just be absolutely delighted to have Timmeh on their team. In fact, I’d say he’s easily my favorite non-Dbacks pitcher in all of baseball.
Since bulldozing his way into the majors in 2007, he has had the 4th best pitching WAR (according to Fangraphs) among all pitchers in baseball. Only Verlander (3), Sabathia (2), and Halladay (1) have been better in that time span. In 996 IP, he has struck out 1100 batters, while posting very good groundball rates. He has the 3rd lowest ERA, 2nd lowest xFIP, and lowest FIP over that time. For all the jokes about how we can expect to see Timmeh 2.0 when Bauer gets called up (and really, we shouldn’t be expecting this)….I’d honestly be pretty satisfied if Bauer ends up producing “only” as much as 50% of what Timmeh has done these past five years, and if Bauer can end up being a 75% version of Timmeh, then I’d be absolutely delighted. Timmeh is….simply….the Freak.
Somehow, this ridiculously awesome pitcher, has a 12-11 record on the season, despite a 2.58 ERA. Even if you include the unearned runs, his RA/9 would be 2.91. That is just sad. He deserves so much better than that Giants offense.
And the article seems to show some evidence that Timmeh is beginning to feel that pressure. Kinda makes you wonder a lot too, if something similar was happening with Haren. Where he felt so much pressure to be “that guy”, for the Dbacks, because the bullpen was so terrible, that his mentality actually ended up coming back to make his pitching worse.
speaking of skewed win-loss records...
Hiroki Kuroda apparently went 4-12 with a 2.96 ERA through 18 starts at one point this year…..
that is absurd…..

why dont u start one then?
Trevor Bauer: 14-3, 1.46 ERA, 160 1/3 IP, 243 K in UCLA, Visalia (Hi-A), and Mobile (AA)

don't think that would make sense
probably like three people would be posting over the next hour.
by CaptainCanuck on Aug 30, 2011 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions
3 hits in the first, 2 runs and HR?
Come on Bauer, we expect better.
now 4 hits, 3 runs
triple, double, single HR… Not his best start.
and a walk.
Bauer is up to 31 pitches in the 1st inning. i guess we can cut him some slack. but they’ve almost gone through the order on him.
an inning to foget.
5 runs scored. and still going. my god. what happened? i did not expect this.
bauer is not allowed to suck anymore
esp in a dbacks uni
Trevor Bauer: 14-3, 1.46 ERA, 160 1/3 IP, 243 K in UCLA, Visalia (Hi-A), and Mobile (AA)

well
better in Mobile than in Arizona.

the good news is he still k'd the side

i was just excited to see a 1-2-3 first and then bam.
guess i’m bad luck. first time i actually follow a minor league game live and I blow it for our soon to be all-star. my bad everyone.
Bauer has an extremely high BABIP
but an excellent MLB level defense can fix that
Trevor Bauer: 14-3, 1.46 ERA, 160 1/3 IP, 243 K in UCLA, Visalia (Hi-A), and Mobile (AA)
by freeland1787 on Aug 30, 2011 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions
thru the 1st inning- his career BABIP is .389
That is unsustainable. if it gets lower than .330- Bauer will have a sub 2.50 ERA
Trevor Bauer: 14-3, 1.46 ERA, 160 1/3 IP, 243 K in UCLA, Visalia (Hi-A), and Mobile (AA)
by freeland1787 on Aug 30, 2011 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions
BABIP
is useless when he was getting crushed.
That’s like saying Bumgarner was unlucky when he gave up like 8 runs in 0.1 IP.
by CaptainCanuck on Aug 30, 2011 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Bauer gave up a lot of hits
3 XB hits and 5 singles isnt extremely unlucky

part of it is still luck
bad command is bad command, and that’s probably why he did so badly today. hopefully the command problem is because of his heavy workload, slightly tiring arm…..and not anything serious
but oftentimes you miss your pitch and the guy still doesn’t square it up. sometimes they do square it up. that’s the part that’s luck.
over the course of a long year, good pitchers miss their spots less often than bad pitchers. so overall the chance of a hitter doing something dangerous to their pitches is lower.
by blue bulldog on Aug 31, 2011 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions
His AA FIP still measures at 2.89
so crappy luck has been his foe tonight
Trevor Bauer: 14-3, 1.46 ERA, 160 1/3 IP, 243 K in UCLA, Visalia (Hi-A), and Mobile (AA)
great pitchers make their own luck.
i don’t even know what that means but it sounded cool.
Very very interesting Diamondbacks Lineup
Bloomquist SS
Parra LF
Upton RF
Montero C
Hill 2B
Overbay 1B
Cowgill CF
Burroughs 3B
Miley P
Professional Lurker... if you see this, there may be a problem..
This lineup makes sense
outside of CF. Overbay is better than Goldschmidt at hitting sinkers and burroughs also has a good approach with them too.
Trevor Bauer: 14-3, 1.46 ERA, 160 1/3 IP, 243 K in UCLA, Visalia (Hi-A), and Mobile (AA)

i wouldn't know.
just seems odd to me… I actually thought that they may site Upton after the hit last night, but guess its no thang.
should Upton charge the mound
next time someone plunks him in the spine again? i think he is being targeted for something we dont know of.
Trevor Bauer: 14-3, 1.46 ERA, 160 1/3 IP, 243 K in UCLA, Visalia (Hi-A), and Mobile (AA)

5-1 Lookouts
Ryan Wheeler RBI single

San Francisco Giants: Is It Time To Make Those October Vacation Plans?
The odds of them now catching the Arizona Diamonbacks are two: slim and none. Short of a complete collapse by Arizona… and your Giants starting to put some runs on the board, the Giants and their wives and the team’s management can plan to start their vacations on September 29.
I say to the wives… START PACKING

The good news about if Bauer's outing is cut short is
that more Bauer in MLB and he has something to learn from
Trevor Bauer: 14-3, 1.46 ERA, 160 1/3 IP, 243 K in UCLA, Visalia (Hi-A), and Mobile (AA)
They said innings
not pitches and its prb gonna be 5 days before he pitches again
Trevor Bauer: 14-3, 1.46 ERA, 160 1/3 IP, 243 K in UCLA, Visalia (Hi-A), and Mobile (AA)
by freeland1787 on Aug 30, 2011 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions
this is exactly why
using innings as a measure of limit doesn’t make sense
he threw 73 pitches. it’s equivalent to one normal outing.
by blue bulldog on Aug 31, 2011 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions
joe saunders can go 6 innings
with that pitch count and look bad while giving up nothing- thats how he rolls
Trevor Bauer: 14-3, 1.46 ERA, 160 1/3 IP, 243 K in UCLA, Visalia (Hi-A), and Mobile (AA)

Your absolutely right
He doesnt have the stuff for AA hitters

i think he means tonight...
atleast i hope so…
too bad this website
cant measure sarcasm- by me saying his doesnt have AA stuff i meant he has MLB stuff. walks+bad defense is what is killing bauer today
Trevor Bauer: 14-3, 1.46 ERA, 160 1/3 IP, 243 K in UCLA, Visalia (Hi-A), and Mobile (AA)

bad defense? seriously?
he was getting crushed. No defense could help that.
by CaptainCanuck on Aug 30, 2011 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions
i guess Bauer will have to learn how to pitch
when his best stuff isnt there like Ian Kennedy can always do. On days Kennedy says he feels like sh!t- he dominates
Trevor Bauer: 14-3, 1.46 ERA, 160 1/3 IP, 243 K in UCLA, Visalia (Hi-A), and Mobile (AA)

sometimes, kennedy dominates
other times, he gets crushed (see: St. Louis Cardinals game)

bauer is prb thinking
wtf do i have to do to get these guys out?
Trevor Bauer: 14-3, 1.46 ERA, 160 1/3 IP, 243 K in UCLA, Visalia (Hi-A), and Mobile (AA)

Bauer isnt prb gonna pitch in AA anymore
it will be likely he will be re-assigned to another level

ugly ugly ugly. think its fatigue, fluke, both? guess we’ll find out next time..
Not a good way to end his minor league career
