SnakeBytes 8/26: Back Home Edition
In the words of Malcolm Reynolds, "Well, that went well."
Recaps:
-
[DBacks.com] Miley's first win worth the trip against Nats - Wade Miley put up a much better outing than his first appearance as a DBack- six scoreless innings this time.
-
[FS Arizona] Miley gets 1st win as D-backs top Nationals - It also didn't hurt that the DBacks offense ended the road trip on a very high note, putting up six runs in the last two innings to crush any hopes of a Nationals rally.
-
[AZ Central] Arizona Diamondbacks defeat Washington Nationals with burst of offense - For a trip that included a six game losing streak, this finale certainly felt more upbeat than you might expect.
-
[Washington Times] Nationals' offense continues lackluster stretch in 8-1 loss to Diamondbacks - The DBacks pitching has been keeping the team in the game lately- only allowing eight runs over their past five games, that'd be a 1.67 ERA over those games.
Fun fact: do you know who leads the Diamondbacks in home runs and RBIs in August this month? I'll give you the answer after the jump.
With five home runs and thirteen RBIs, our leader in both categories this month is Paul Goldschmidt. Not bad, rookie. Thanks to the Elias Sports Bureau for pointing that out.
Series Previews:
-
[FS Arizona] Today on FOX Sports Arizona: D-backs vs. Padres - Gibson is happy with how the team has recovered from the losing streak. "We could have folded. But I felt we hung together very well."
-
[Sign on San Diego] On Deck: Padres open three-game series in Arizona - Get used to seeing the Padres. We play them ten more times this season.
-
[Dbacks.com] D-backs sport new look, same goal vs. Padres - The great thing about being in the lead? It's not complicated to keep it- you just keep winning games.
DBacks News:
-
[AZ Central] Diamondbacks looking to get even more out of Gerardo Parra - He's already stepped up from previous seasons, but the team thinks he can be even better.
-
[DBacks.com] D-backs looking forward to shorter road trips - No more trips out to the east coast, at least during the regular season.
-
[MLB Daily Dish] 5 Questions with Diamondbacks' Expert Jim McLennan - Oh, a Diamondbacks expert, is he now?
-
[Baseball Nation] Standout Rookies We Didn't See Coming - Josh Collmenter earns a deserved mention here.
-
[Venom Strikes] Thirty-One Games Till the End for the Dbacks - We're coming up close on the final month of the season. Here's how our games are split up.
Around Baseball:
-
[ESPN] Impact of Jered Weaver's $85M contract - Weaver gave a sizable hometown discount. But that doesn't necessarily mean other pitchers will.
-
[Big League Stew] Adrian Gonzalez homers on 3 straight pitches over 2 games - I bet Padres fans barely even miss him this year.
-
[HardballTalk] Jim Thome is gone, but the Jim Thome giveaway goes on in Minnesota - Traded the day before a giveaway? Whoops.
-
[Baseball Nation] Adam Dunn On Track To Set Record Nobody Wants - Could Adam Dunn have the lowest batting average of any qualifying batter since 1900? Well, he needs 71 plate appearances to qualify, and he needs to remember how to hit if he wants to avoid it.

A few Diamondback and former Diamondback mentions
in 25 Things You Didn’t Know About Baseball
My favorite:
Defensive metrics remain far less convincing than their offensive brethren. That said, they match up well with scouting reports that compare [Mark] Reynolds to a statue at third base – and, in some cases, say a statue would actually be an improvement.

I was really surprised about that
he played gold glove D here.

Thats not true
Reynolds defense improved over time here, and specifically for the first month of 2010 he didn’t make an error, so everyone was raving about the improvements. First impressions and all.
I was really happy with his improvement, and am surprised he has slid backwards so much in Baltimore.
But on the whole…..Reynolds was never above average at 3rd by any measure, scouts or stats. (traditional OR advanced) His aggreagat defensive rating, (aggregate of several different rating systems as well as the fans scouting report) is probably as good a guide as any

Jim....
..your Married… With Children selection for the last question was great. Hopefully we throw the Giants out this season… with a detour into the wall, Al Bundy style.
Well there's your problem!
Who's this Jim McLennan guy?
He seems like he would fit in here at the ’Pit pretty well…

Interesting contrast to the D-backs's approach to such things...
Tampa Bay Buccaneers buy each player an iPad to hold playbook, videos
Daron "...the D. Baxter fan-club"
Mark: "A non-profit organization."
That's really a smart thing to do
and the club can erase and control content with the iPad, while teams that use notebooks risk having that information photocopied. Brilliant.

iPads
could be lost also. But yeah, I generally agree with using technology instead of being scared of it.
I got nothin'.
I believe that proprietary programs could be remotely erased on a iPad
notebooks and other paper products, not so much.

The article
mentions how the iPads can be remotely wiped, so it seems like a great idea for a team. Instead of a 500 page playbook, you can have one device that has all the plays AND game film.
Tomorrow is another day.
Makes sense
But probably more useful for a football team, as they have a lot more content to pass on to more players than a baseball franchise would.
"Never ignore a coincidence. Unless you're busy, in which case always ignore a coincidence."
well
if baseball teams ever started using sabermetrics……
by blue bulldog on Aug 26, 2011 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Even then
Football players have how many plays they have to learn?
"Never ignore a coincidence. Unless you're busy, in which case always ignore a coincidence."
Football definitely would probably benefit more, yeah
But having an Ipad with all the info and scouting you need for that day’s game ready and going whenever you need it seems just as handy day to day, too, for both players and coaches.
I really
can’t imagine most sabermetrics would help a player on the day to day. Watching video? Sure. Looking at some spray charts, and tendencies? Sure. But most stats aren’t going to help players because what a player does is completely different than what people do to analyze what they do.
Tomorrow is another day.
i was including tendencies as part of saber
but i mean…sure that’s what i meant
presumably, what would help a hitter out the most is learning how pitchers pitch in each count. fastball 80% of the time on a 2-1 count. stuff like that. general location, inside out.
would be very useful.
by blue bulldog on Aug 26, 2011 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions
But
most players already do all that. iPads would just make the work easier and more streamlined.
Tomorrow is another day.
lol
that’s totally not true
in fact, most of the Dbacks have gone on record to say they don’t study that. i believe Stephen Drew is the only hitter on the Dbacks that has ever said he studies pitcher trends before the game.

It's so strange
to have the game time back to 6:40 instead of 4:05. :(

If the time change translates to victories
I’ll get over having to wait a bit longer… ;-)

love it!
now i can actually watch. i wasn’t even getting home from work until the 8th these past several weeks…
I wasn't getting home until the games were over.
I haven’t seen a game since game 1 of the Phillies series. When I was home sick.
There are lots of east coast teams that you'll feel very comfortable with
Red Sox, Yankees. Give them a try.

D-Backs Lineup Tonight
1. Willie Bloomquist – SS
2. Ryan Roberts – 3B
3. Justin Upton – RF
4. Chris Young – CF
5. Paul Goldschmidt – 1B
6. Aaron Hill – 2B
7. Gerardo Parra – LF
8. Henry Blanco – C
9. Josh Collmenter – RHP
Well there's your problem!
Right
Because when Parra goes 5 for 14 in the two spot, the best choice is to move him back down to the bottom third of the order.
"Never ignore a coincidence. Unless you're busy, in which case always ignore a coincidence."
I think
It’s written in some sort of Arizona Territory Common Law that Willie Bloomquist HAS to bat leadoff

somehow Willie Bloomquist is back in leadoff again
didn’t some people say this would cease to happen once we traded for Aaron Hill and MacDonald?

Nice To See
Miley throw a good game, he walked a tightrope the first 4 innings but seemed to come up with the plus pitches he needed to get out of the inning. Hopefully this is a sign to come and our #5 spot in the rotation won’t be a blackhole of suckage anymore.
by J.RyanWalters on Aug 26, 2011 8:50 PM EDT via iPhone app reply actions
I agree 100%.
It’s way to early to tell, judging on only two starts would be a stretch. But the homer inside me wants to believe Miley fixes the 5 spot for us, and Saundo becomes the weak link in our rotation. :)

Miley is quite a ways away
from moving up the rotation depth roster, and he’s looking back over his shoulder.
Competition is a wonderful thing.

Competition breeds the best results. I especially enjoy watching how personally close our pitchers are, both in the bigs and down on the farm. It’s nice to see everybody pushing eachother to be better,it brings stronger clubhouses to the organization.

funny how
Before JP went down it felt like our whole organization’s pitching future rested on him… so glad he’s just one of many now. Hope he works out… but it won’t kill us if he doesn’t.
