Diamondbacks Farm Round-Up: 8/20, Pinch-hit Edition

Dan has discovered the joys of returning to the wilderness, in that his Internet is down - I think someone gave the oxen NyQuil. So, you're stuck with my lack of insightful commentary for the day. The six contests were split, with the Arizona farm teams outscored 38-39 by the opposition. Curiously, the games saw three ejections of coaches or players. Was there a full moon or something? Our prize pitching prospect started in Mobile, and it's there we turn for Snakelet of the Day - however, it wasn't on the mound...

Snakelet of the Day:
A.J. Pollock (Double-A): 3-for-6, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R

Triple-A: Reno 8 , Tacoma 7. An eighth-inning two-run double from 2B Angel Berroa scored the tying and go-ahead runs for the Aces, as they escaped with a win, having blown a five-run lead of their own. Berroa had another double plus a third hit, and C Robby Hammock a pair of knocks - however, Hammock was also ejected in the sixth inning. Kevin Mulvey had a mediocre start, allowing five runs in 5.2 innings; he struggled with his control, walking four, but struck out five. Ryan Cook got the save with a perfect ninth, and the Aces increased their lead over the Rainiers to 6.5 games.

Double-A: Mobile 13 @ Jacksonville 6.If you were in last night's GDT, you might have heard about this one. In fact, I think Trevor Bauer got more mentions than Wade Miley. He got his first win with Mobile, going five innings and striking out eight batters, on only three hits. He did walk three, and that proved his undoing, as two of those came home on a three-run homer in the fourth. Those were the only runs allowed, in what generally appears to have been a very solid outing. Bauer also drove in the first RBI of his career, with a bases-loaded walk in the second, and went 0-for-0 with two free passes.

However, as you can tell from the score, this was a night for the Mobile offense, every bit as much - they pounded out 18 hits and drew seven walks. The top three in the order - RF Adam Eaton, CF A.J. Pollock and 1B Daryle Ward - all had three hit nights, combining to go 9-for-17  C Josh Ford and 2B Kyle Greene each also reached base safely three times apiece. The Baybears scored ten runs over the final four innings, to win at a canter.

High-A: Visalia 6 @ Modesto 7. A tumultuous ninth inning saw the Rawhide come back from 5-2 down, scoring four times to take the lead; the tying run came home on a balk. However, Taylor Sinclair was unable to hold it, retiring the first two batters, before giving two walks and two hits, the last of which scored two Nuts. Brad Wilson gave Visalia a quality start, working seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits and a walk. SS Chris Owings had a pair of triples, while there were also multi-hit nights from 2B David Nick and 1B Bobby Borchering. Another ejection here, with Rawhide Batting Coach Andy Abad tossed by the home-plate umpire in the second.

A-ball: South Bend 5 @ West Michigan 3.The Whitecaps jumped out to a 2-0 lead, getting four hits in the first, but managed only three the rest of the way, and the Silver Hawks came back immediately, tying the game on 2B Gerson Montilla's two-run double. He scored the go-ahead run on a ground-out, and South Bend completed their scoring in the fourth thanks to back-to-back RBI singles from DH Ramon Castillo and CF Ender Inciarte. Starter J.R. Bradley got the W, allowing three runs on five hits over five innings, with six K's. Kable Hogben stood out in relief, fanning four over two scoreless frames.

Low-A: Yakima 2 @ Tri-City 7. The Bears took the lead in the first, and were 2-0 up in the middle of the third, but they allowed the Dust Devils to score seven unanswered runs. Starter Ylomar Camacho wasn't helped by his defense, as three of the four runs he allowed were unearned; he went 5.1 innings, scattering six hits and a walk, and fanning three. Replacement Greg Robinson was wild, walking five in 2.2 frames, leading to three runs. DH Garrett Weber and LF Henry Zabala picked up a couple of hits each, Weber having the Bears' only RBI. C Stephen Rodriguez walked twice.

Rookie: Missoula 4, Ogden 9. The third ejection of the night came early for the Osprey, starting pitcher Jesse Darrah not even completing the first inning before being tossed. He hit the batter immediately after an arguable grand-slam homer (it may have been foul), and was ejected. All four runs were unearned due to an earlier error, but it dropped Missoula into a hole from which they never recovered, the Raptors scoring in each of the first five frames. Keith Hessler was the best of the relievers, striking out three in two scoreless innings. 2B Tom Belza and SS Stephen Cardullo each had a double and single for the Osprey, but they went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

DSL: DSL Diamondbacks 8, DSL White Sox - canceled
