SnakeBytes 8/18: Ian Kennedy Feature Story Edition
Today's edition takes its title from Nick Piecoro- but first, a look back at yesterday's unfortunate affair.
Recaps:
-
[DBacks.com] Formidable pitching bites Snakes in defeat - Only getting three hits isn't going to be enough to win most games.
-
[FS Arizona] D-backs unravel in 9-2 loss to Phillies - It started out well, but after the sixth, just downhill from there.
-
[AZ Central] Philadelphia Phillies' Cliff Lee excellent as Arizona Diamondbacks' Joe Saunders falters - Every streak has to end sometime, of course, and I don't feel too bad about getting shut down by Cliff Lee. At least we broke up his scoreless streak.
-
[Philadelphia Inquirer]Phillies bounce back, top D'backs - Wilson Valdez sure did admire that hit for a long time, given the fact he's a guy with five home runs in 878 at-bats.
Okay, on to more pleasant topics. After the jump, some brighter thoughts about the DBacks, including a fair amount of love for our best starter this season, and our future potential ace.
DBacks News:-
[Fox Sports] D-backs' Kennedy has found his swagger - This team has a lot more swagger than they did in spring training, and no one has earned it more than Ian Kennedy.
-
[ESPN] Ian Kennedy blossoms into ace for Arizona Diamondbacks - IPK is certainly drawing some attention. A gaudy win-loss record like his will do that.
-
[AZ Central] Arizona Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson downplays attention - Gibby doesn't want the spotlight on the team? Well, since two of the other headlines on the AZ Central page say "National media taking notice of the Diamondbacks" and "National darlings," I think he isn't going to get his way.
-
[Big League Stew] Five reasons why the D-Backs will beat out the Giants - Man, optimism.
-
[DBacks.com] Young takes lessons from Arizona's past - CY remembers what happened in 2008. The DBacks can't relax as we head towards the end of the season.
-
[Fangraphs] Wishful Thinking: Arizona Should Call Up Trevor Bauer - Apparently some people are pretty impatient to see Trevor Bauer pitch. ESPN might be, too- if you've got access to their Insider content, they're asking Is Trevor Bauer the answer?
Around Baseball:
-
[New York Times] Minor Leaguer Tests Positive for H.G.H. - Mike Jacobs, a minor leaguer (formerly) in the Rockies system, is the first professional athlete to ever test positive for HGH.
-
[The Washington Post] Why the Nats couldn’t wear military hats during Tuesday’s game - Very odd. They say that they prefer teams to commemorate causes with uniform patches or batting-practice displays. But why let the Padres wear their camo jerseys, but object to the Nationals wearing the hats?
-
[Baseball Nation] Is Jeff Francoeur The New Kyle Davies? - Good news, Snakepit! Frenchy's got a two year contract extension, so he'll be in Arizona for Spring Training next year. Yesssssssss.
-
[Baseball Nation] The Five Best Things About Billy Butler's Disputed Home Run - Human element!
-
[Sports Illustrated] Stephen Strasburg hit hard in third rehab start - WHAT? No! I refuse! I roll a Will Save to disbelieve!

I know it gets brought up every time someone talks about IPK
But has there ever been a multi-team trade that has worked out so well for all parties involved as the one bringing him to AZ? Usually at least one team gets shafted bad.
well
we sort of got shafted
and then we made the awesome trade for Dan Hudson
so…if you include the Dan Hudson trade, then the White Sox got shafted. if you don’t include the Dan Hudson trade, we got shafted.

I dunno about that
I still think I’d take Ian and Edwin over Scherzer and Schlereth today. Getting Hudson just made it all that sweeter. I think that trade’s very close, and you can make the argument fairly easily for keeping Scherzer, but saying we got shafted seems extreme.
Here's
another article from ESPN. They are going through and rating all the postseason contenders, and it’s the Dbacks turn.

I like
that Big League Stew article! More praise for IPK. Praise for RyRo, and more gushing about Bauer!
