Lyle Overbay Returns to Diamondbacks, Xavier Nady to DL
Xavier Nady, hit by a pitch in last night's game against the Mets, has been placed on the disabled list with a fractured left hand. To replace Nady, the Diamondbacks have re-signed their former first baseman, Lyle Overbay.
Overbay was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in the Richie Sexson deal. He also spent five years with the Toronto Blue Jays and signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates this past off-season. He was hitting only .227 / .300 / .349 with 8 home runs when he was released by Pittsburgh last week.
To make room on the 40-man roster for Overbay, the Diamondbacks designated Juan Jaime for assignment.

Didn't See This Coming
He’s a veteran and we know how Towers loves veterans. Should be good for the occasional start and a decent pinch hitter off the bench that doesn’t strike out too much. It’s probably better than calling up Miranda and Lyle’s a good clubhouse guy.

I like this signing
Goldy will be starting pretty much everyday, Overbay will get a few starts and probably be a recurring pinch hitter.
Nothing really to dislike about this, better than having Miranda back IMO.
why do people hate Miranda so much?
he’s not that bad. i’d honestly rather have him than Overbay.

I don't hate Miranda
I’m glad we gave him a shot. But I don’t see anything there. I think Overbay is a slight upgrade over Miranda. If it wasn’t a pennant race I wouldn’t think that slight upgrade is worth blocking someone who might possibly be useful. But it is a pennant race and we’ve already given Miranda an extended look.

The worst major leaguer is better at baseball than I'll ever be at anything I ever do in my life.
Juan Jaime is basically the prime example
of what can go wrong with Tommy John Surgery.

I'm shocked he hasn't returned to action yet...
Although I do think he’ll stay in the system. Could just take time. The arm is good.

guess they felt
that Burroughs or Ransom wasn’t an option at 1B, nor did any of the outfielders appeal… I’m alright with it, seen worse decisions, that’s for sure.
I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused....
I don't hate it
But it’s hard to believe it will help much. His numbers are pretty bad this year, and at 34 his best days are probably behind him. Probably no worse than Miranda.
Pirates fan here
Lyle Overbay was just an absolute disaster for us. Five million dollars down the drain. With that in mind, if he gets to AZ and starts tearing it up, I’ll hate him even more. Best of luck to you guys in the pennant race.
Yes.
I believe we refer to him as “Lyle Overpay”

Miranda is not worse than Overbay
This season, Overbay isn’t any kind of improvement over Juan Miranda, so I’m not sure why this would be so much better than just bringing Miranda back up. For the statistically inclined, their lines for the year are below:
Overbay—.227/BA .300/OBP .349/SLG .649/OPS 77/SO (352 AB)
Miranda—.213/BA .315/OBP .402/SLG .717/OPS 48/SO (174 AB)
Miranda has a lower batting average and he strikes out at a higher rate (21% vs. 27%). Neither of those differences are dramatic, though. Miranda is better at getting on base and he has more pop.
I don’t really care one way or the other, but saying that having Overbay is better than having Miranda isn’t really supportable.
Overbay's career numbers
Are .270/.354/.439, which would be noticeably better than Miranda. Obviously, it’s nowhere near a given that he’ll play up to those career numbers, but this move probably has a higher upside than calling up Miranda.

Maybe it has something to do with the 110 OPS+ Overbay had
Over the three seasons prior to 2011? Dude was a decent regular for the Jays, and as a bench bat, you could do a lot worse. Like… Miranda.

Overbay's
been solidly above average each of the past 3 years, though. Miranda doesn’t have that kind of track record.
If Overbay fails, we can still cut him and still have Miranda. All this does is add depth.
Goldschmidt happens.
This is a nice pick up, given the time of the year and the circumstances
Overbay will be at least as effective as Nady had been, so nothing lost really, and he might actually play better. Wouldn’t that be fun?

We don't have to shell out too much money
and I have always liked Overbay. Good back-up to Goldy!

Like it a lot
Here are reasons why this is good, and probably better than even having a healthy Nady around:
1) Overbay had a 110 OPS+ from 2008-2010. There’s ability – even during seasons on the wrong side of 30 years old – here.
2) Overbay is a doubles hitter, and the right-field power gap will be prime for him.
3) Overbay is a left-handed hitter, which creates a platoon compliment for Goldschmidt, which Nady couldn’t provide.
4) Overbay had a .269 BABIP with the Pirates before he was let go – at the very least, he’s better than his 2011 numbers.
5) Overbay haz Veteran Presence™.
6) Overbay is almost certainly better than Andy Tracy.
7) Overbay is better at first base and at the plate than any of the options the D-backs had to occasionally man first base until Blum returns. Willie Bloomquist, Cody Ransom, or Sean Burroughs as backup first basemen? Erm, no thanks.
Can’t lose signing. If Overbay does well, Ransom goes away when Blum returns. If Overbay flops, he departs when Blum comes back, and Blum takes over occasional 1B duties (and is a good LHH, himself).

Who is the backup SS if Ransom goes away?
Blum? Is he a serviceable SS?

Probably Blum
They wouldn’t use him much at short, but it’d be him. Can’t be much worse than Bloomquist, really.

You make it sound like
he’s actually good.
by CaptainCanuck on Aug 13, 2011 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm fine with this pickup......but
3 caveats:
His low BABIP the last two seasons is directly attributeable to a big reduction in his LD rate.
From 2003-2009 his LD rate was 23% and the last two seasons it’s under 19%. So the BABIP drop is not flukey
He strikes out a lot. He is not “contact” hitter…although some may think of him that way
BECAUSE he’s left handed, and a veteran, there is a very good chance he starts taking away A LOT of playing time from Goldschmidt who just had a golden sombrero and has K’d 17 times in 37 PA’s.
The worst major leaguer is better at baseball than I'll ever be at anything I ever do in my life.
Your line drive point is fair
Here’s hoping he recovers that with Arizona. I wouldn’t be shocked if that LD-Rate fluctuated and eventually stabilized at a higher point.
I don’t think he’ll take away a lot of PT from Goldy – if they were looking for someone to take away consistent at-bats from Goldschmidt, they’d have acquired someone who was less of a flier.

It seems like you're trying to use logic
while talking about a Kirk Gibson-produced lineup.
:(
My value over a replacement poster is approximately 10.5 runs.
who else was available that wouldn't be a "flier"
Was anyone better released or avaialble as a FA ?
Has anyone cleared waivers that they could trade for without having to up a top prospect ?
I’m just saying Gibby will not let Goldy keep going up there and striking out like that when he has a left handed veteran to call on. That should be pretty obvious watching his lineups at choices at first base all year.
The worst major leaguer is better at baseball than I'll ever be at anything I ever do in my life.

Less concerned
about the platooning with Goldy. Miranda could provide that, and I’m not too interested in having a larger platoonmate against RHP.
Goldschmidt happens.
Had Overbay been cut by the Pirates?
Or are we looking at a PTBNL in exchange?
